I found photographs of this house from a Hungarian blog (don't ask) but even with the help of an internet translator, there was absolutely no information about it; no name, no location, except for the mistaken assumption that it was in Paris. In 1942, a young Parisian woman fearing Nazi persecution fled to Southern France, leaving behind a lavish apartment in Paris that she would never return to. 70 years later, its hidden trove of artwork has finally been exposed for the first time. One piece, however, stood out from the rest of the artistic and historic relics – 19th-century Italian painter Giovanni Boldini's portrait of his muse, Marthe de Florian. The painting itself has been valued at roughly $3.4 million.

Hello dear friends! I can not believe that today is the first day of autumn already!! Well, over here it is autumn and officially my favourite season... It is a balmy beautiful evening in Cape Town and a cascading starry sky hangs above us! Totally gorgeous. As I was on my way home from a service for the World Wide Day of Prayer for Women I was wondering what I am going to blog about and then I checked into my blog and my eye fell on this beautiful conservatory...and voila! I was on a mission.... The conservatory above is my favourite of all time! It is also from one of my favourite houses ever... Henk and Monika Smith's amazing home, of which I can never get enough! So, then I found a few more that grabbed my fancy... This image is quite amazing... you can quickly bend down and retrieve your jaw from the ground! It's like a dream, isn't it? I could not find the correct photo credit and it just said Winter Palace . Does anyone know? Anyway, I could do a great deal of daydream believing in there!!! It's like a movie set for a romantic scene and ..well...let your imagination go... a proposal perhaps? These beauties are at Schonbrunn Palace Vienna. Love the shape and can you just imagine the treasures they hold? Everything we need is here... beautiful shapes, a chandy, an elegant bench, a water feature and one of my favourite tree ferns...perfect! Is it just me or does a conservatory hold a sense of mystique for you as well? Just the place to while away a lazy Sunday.... The architectural detail on conservatories are always beguling. I think its time to take a look at some daybeds for another post. I bet you all have a favourite lurking in your wish list closet! Enchanting... On Monday I will introduce another wonderful blog in my Blog it Forward Series and on Tuesday is our monthly international Bloggers post for "By Invitation Only" and this time I will be taking you on a tour of my wonderful city of Cape Town! Have a fab Friday Live well Veronica xxx Images ~ Pinteres and House and Leisure

Wadi Do'an palais Buqshan Khaila Hadhramaut is a historical region of the south Arabian Peninsula along the Gulf of Aden in the Arabian Sea, extending eastwards from Yemen to the borders of the Dhofar region of Oman. The name of the region is currently retained in the smaller Hadhramaut Governorate of the Republic of Yemen. The people of Hadhramaut are called Hadhramis. Narrowly, Hadhramaut refers to the historical Qu'aiti and Kathiri sultanates, which were in the Aden Protectorate overseen by the British Resident at Aden until their abolition upon the independence of South Yemen in 1967. The current governorate of Hadhramaut roughly incorporates the former territory of the two sultanates. It consists of a narrow, arid coastal plain bounded by the steep escarpment of a broad plateau, with a very sparse network of deeply sunk wadis (seasonal watercourses). The undefined northern edge of Hadhramaut slopes down to the desert Empty Quarter. In a wider sense, Hadhramaut includes the territory of Mahra to the east all the way to the contemporary border with Oman. This encompasses the current governorates of Hadramaut and Mahra in their entirety as well as parts of the Shabwah Governorate. The Hadhramis live in densely built towns centered on traditional watering stations along the wadis. Hadhramis harvest crops of wheat and millet, tend date palm and coconut groves, and grow some coffee. On the plateau, Bedouins tend sheep and goats. Society is still highly tribal, with the old Seyyid aristocracy, descended from Prophet Muhammad, traditionally educated and strict in their Islamic observance and highly respected in religious and secular affairs. © Eric Lafforgue www.ericlafforgue.com

Back to La Pedrera... Casa Milà, commonly known as La Pedrera is the largest civil building designed by Antoni Gaudi. The apartment block was constructed between 1906 and 1910. It was Gaudi's last work before devoting himself to the construction of the Sagrada Familia. Pedro Milà i Camps, a rich businessman was impressed by the Casa Battló, an expressionist building designed by Gaudi. He commissioned Gaudi to construct an apartment building on a corner site at the Passeig de Gracia, in the Eixample district. The result is a less colorful but nevertheless an even more unconventional building than the Casa Batlló. It breaks with traditional architecture by using not a single straight line. The wavy facade, with its large pores, reminds one of an undulating beach of fine sand, formed, for example, by a receding dune. The honeycombs made by industrious bees might also spring to the mind of the observer viewing the snake-like ups-and-downs that run through the whole bulding. In this building Gaudi created a paradox: an artificial but natural building which was simultaneously a summary of all the forms that he has since become famous for. The building does not use load-bearing walls, but rests on pillars and arches. Together with the use of steel this allowed the architect to create completely irregular floor plans. Even the height of the pillars and ceilings differ from one to another. The attractive rooms have a lot of character, with a mixture of expressionist and Art Nouveau styles. On the outside, the undulating balconies look like a series of waves. The iron-wrought balconies were designed by Josep Maria Jujol, who improvised on the spot. Some people see the facade as a cliff-like rock with caves. During construction, people dubbed it a quarry, or 'Pedrera'. To date, people still call the building 'La Pedrera' rather than 'Casa Milà'. The roof is probably the most extraordinary of the building. It features a number of surrealistic colorful chimneys. The roof also features a bench similar to the one in Park Guell.
