These alphabet learning activities require very little preparation, and my preschoolers loved them! For each of these games, we used a alphabet chart that I made out of a square piece of poster board. Super simple. I chose to do capital letters on the chart because they are easier for young kids to write and […]

Do you ever get tired of singing the ABCs? Breathe new life into your efforts to teach your children the alphabet with these lesser-known ABC songs. "Alphabet Medley" by Sharon Lois and Bram This song appears on the Sing A to Z album. The track begins with the traditional alphabet song, but the second part of the medley is a totally different - and very catchy! - tune. Because Sharon, Lois, and Bram are Canadian, they sing "zed" instead of "zee" for the final letter, which might confuse some US listeners, but you could always learn the tune and sing the song your own way. "Nursery Rhyme Rap" from The Bilingual Book of Rhymes, Songs, Stories, and Fingerplays by Pam Schiller, Rafael Lara-Alecio, and Beverly J. Irby The chorus of this song is the letters of the alphabet, and the verses are different nursery rhymes. Everything is sung to the tune of 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall. "ABCD Medley" by the Laurie Berkner Band In this song, Laurie Berkner gives the traditional alphabet song a bouncy new rhythm and intersperses it with other favorite children's songs, including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Row, Row, Row Your Boat. "African Alphabet" This beautiful song from Sesame Street teaches the names of the letters and their corresponding sounds by describing a simple scene from an African jungle. It is sung by Kermit the Frog and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. "ABC-DEF-GHI"Also from Sesame Street, this song plays with letter sounds as Big Bird attempts to pronounce ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ as one word. "A You’re Adorable" This is an old song from the 1940's, a hit version of which was recorded by Perry Como. It has also been heard on Sesame Street and recorded by Sharon, Lois, and Bram and John Lithgow. Martha Alexander also did a really sweet board book version, published in 1994. "Marching Around the Alphabet" by Hap Palmer Hap Palmer turns the alphabet into a physical game, where kids march around a set of letters lying on the floor, and stop periodically to identify the nearest letter. See this song in action on YouTube. "ABC Chant" by Barbara Milne This song is a list of the letters just like the original song, but it has a slightly different, gentler tune, which can easily be learned on a guitar or ukulele. "El Abecedario" by Jose Luis Orozco Jose Luis Orozco is well-known for his Spanish language children's songs. This is his alphabet song, focusing on the letters of the Spanish alphabet. (It is followed by the traditional English alphabet song.) "Swinging the Alphabet" by The Three Stooges This silly song was featured in a 1938 Three Stooges film called Violent Is the Word for Curly. According to Wikipedia, it was written even earlier, in 1875, under the title "The Spelling Bee." In the 1980s, it was recorded by Joanie Bartels on Sillytime Magic as simply "The Alphabet Song."

Amsterdam-based graphic designer and writer Louis Luthi guides readers through his collection of books with letters for titles, referred to as “alphabet books.” Some of these titles are familiar, such as John Updike’s S., Georges Perec’s W, and Louis Zukofsky’s A. Others are obscure, perhaps even imaginary, like Arnold Skemer’s C and D, or Zach Sodenstern’s A. Tracing connections between these books, the author elaborates on the symbolic content of letters, Joycean characters, Franz Kafka, Guy Davenport, and libraries within libraries. Designed by the author and mixing essay and fiction, the book is a playful meditation on contemporary literature, typography, and book collecting. Published by Roma Publications and Lectoraat Art & Public Space, 2019 Softcover, 104 pages, color and b&w images, 5.25 × 7.9 inches ISBN: 978-9-49-281139-4
M., who I met on the facebook, in connection with MEC, advised me to have a look at the MAKATON signs that she uses with her daughter to connect the two languages. No matter which language you use, use the same sign for the same thing, so the child can learn to connect the meaning. You can make up your own signs as well, or do a signing course in Hungarian. I don't want to recommend any courses as we didn't take them. Just google it: baby sign language course Budapest. Here are some examples, signs we use on a daily basis: Though we sign the horse in a different way: You can find more signs here. You can also learn from a special BBC programme for kids with special needs. The programme itself is called Something Special. Each programme sees Justin and Mr Tumble (played by Justin) out and about applying signing in a variety of places. Topics covered include babies, pets, toys, weather, clothes, shops, food, all about me, where I live and colours. Mr Tumble always dresses up, wearing brightly-coloured clothes and even big shoes! He moves around clumsily and has lots of fun. The language used throughout each programme is supported by Makaton signs and symbols and is designed to be understood by children in the early stages of language development. Full episodes are 15-20 minutes long. What I did with this programme is that I watched them one by one on youtube. I learnt the signs (they are very straight forward and easy to learn) and started using them both in English and in Hungarian (same sign for the same thing). E. was 6-7 months old when I introduced signing to her. (4-5 signs at a time). When she was familiar with these (after about 2-3 weeks) I introduced new ones. Sometimes I picked a short part of an episode (max. 5-6 minutes long) and we watched it together. This could have begun earlier as well. But never cry over split milk. Click on the link, the first video I saw and really was fascinated by it - Something Special- Baby I don't do the signing all the time only if E. is not paying attention or I really want to link a new expression in both languages. Most of the time signing draws her attention. In the next post I'll write about some songs which can be followed with signing. It's a hit with kids. They love it! You'll love it too. -------------------------UPDATE 2016 ------------------------------- The programme Something Special (Mr Tumble) got renewed still it's great. On Something Special youtube channel you can even find songs signed by Mr Tumble (Justin)
