Most bird watchers and scientists say that there are roughly 9,000 to 10,000 species of birds. One of the main ways to identify them is physical appearance and once you start looking closer, it becomes obvious that birds come in many shapes and colors. And some are absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. From those with incredible eyelashes to the ones that look like tiny cotton balls, continue scrolling and check out some of the most beautiful birds from around the world.
These belong to a common coot, a member of the Rallidae family. Coots flaunt remarkable “fissipalmate” feet, which means their toes are lobed. This adaptation is useful both to propel the bird while swimming and to help it move over soft, uneven surfaces. They have strong legs and can walk and run vigorously.

I've spotted these cute creatures a couple of times, briefly crossing the alley before disappearing in the thick jungle surrounding the Mexican resort. I consider myself lucky to have spotted an entire family traveling from tree to tree, about 40ft from where I was standing. I found a small opening and carefully slipped between the trees, making sure I don't scratch myself. Te coati bunch quickly became aware of my presence and made their way deep in the jungle, retrieving the youngsters one by one from different tree branches. I've found them quite cute and intelligent. While searching for the coati latin name I've sadly ran across this recent Herald Tribune article stating that 45 coatis have recently been poisoned in Cancun's mangroves :-( www.laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=343607&CategoryId=...

Visit: www.naturephotographyblog.com A portrait (head shot or bust) of a Crested Auklet at it's nesting colony on Saint Paul Island (The Pribilof Islands) in the Bearing Sea off the coast of Alaska. The Crested Auklet (Aethia cristatella) is a small seabird of the family Alcidae which nests in huge colonies in the Bering Sea and Sea of Okhotsk. They often breed in mixed-species colonies with Least Auklets. The Crested Auklet can measure 18–27 cm (7.1–11 in) in length, 34–50 cm (13–20 in) in wingspan and weigh 195–330 g (6.9–12 oz). It is recognized primarily by two characters in the breeding season. The first is its 'crest', a group of bristle feathers located above its eye on the top of its head. The second is a social odor that the auklets produce during the breeding season, which has been described as smelling like tangerines. Crested Auklets are planktivores. Their diet consists mainly of krill, but they are also known to eat copepods, pteropods (such as Limacina), amphipods and larval fishes. Their main predators are Herring Gulls and other gulls, Arctic Fox and ravens, but they have been reported in the stomachs of halibut caught on St. Lawrence Island.
