The retrospective was a watershed moment in the sculptor's career—and in art history—writes Jed Perl in his new book 'Calder: The Conquest of Space.'

A collection of unique ceramic pieces ranging from rarities to curiosities, with some classics, pieces of beauty and the occasional oddities. Selected for their unique originality, function. style and form. The first image at the top is a piece I recently chanced upon at a Chinese grocery store which they were selling as a plate warmer. Its width is 10 inches and has a depth of 2 1/4 inches while being hollow inside.. It had a spout on the right which was used for adding hot water and has the auspicious Ba Kua eight sides. Spindly, long-limbed creatures stand with unusual grace and elegance. Their delicate bodies graze soft sandy beaches, brush up against the cold stone of old castles and float through thick grassy meadows. They are effigies for the 'huge elemental land spirits' in charge of guarding the ley lines that branch all across the earth. Many of these creatures close their eyes in a peaceful slumber, knowing that they are one with the earth beneath their feet. Many seem to be involved in their own narratives, experiencing feelings of terror, ecstasy, or in transit.

Ceramicist William Kidd has been working for over 25 years using a combination of wheel throwing and hand building to form his imaginative organic specimens. The Florida-based artist shares in a statement on his website that he draws inspiration from the natural world: “my work is not an imitation of any real living thing, but rather life forms that might exist in some other worldly place.” Kidd uses low-fire red earthenware finished with oxide stains, underglazes, and crawl glaze to form sculptural seeds, fruits, and flowers. “…the strokes of the hammer on the chisel have to be in time with your heartbeat or pulse.” Barbara Hepworth’s name is synonymous with smooth, monolithic forms resembling human bodies or careworn sea-lashed rocks. Today she is recognised as one of Britain’s foremost Modernist sculptors, part of a generation exploring post-war abstraction with a hard-won,...
