I don't make a quilt expecting it's going to be one of a series, but sometimes an idea is too good to play with only once. Diamond Jubilee, 2015 I made this quilt as a high school graduation present for my niece, a hip West Coast girl. I didn't want to make her a typical quilt. I wanted something that would be new and fresh but stylish. It was inspired by Pam Goecke Dinndorf 's quilt, Harlequin. She sells a pattern here. Some of my best quilts are made when I am barely paying attention - as if the quilt flies out of the ends of my fingers without any effort. This one took eight days - or rather six evenings after work to design and two days to sew the flimsy together. Jewel Box, 2017 Jewel Box came about because I had the idea to make a dark diamonds quilt. I screwed around with dark fabrics from my stash for weeks, not coming up with anything that worked for me. I set the idea aside and instead worked with fabrics that were darker than the Diamond Jubilee quilt, but not as dark as I had originally planned. Once I let go of an idea that wasn't fully formed, I was able to embrace these middle value diamonds and this lovely quilt developed. Dark Majesty 2017 No matter how much I tried to ignore it, I just knew a quilt with dark fabrics was in there somewhere. Finally I realized I needed more fabrics from which to choose, so I went shopping for dark fabrics with large prints that would form the backbone of the quilt. With those in hand, this quilt came about. Tickled Pink Tickled Pink, 2018 Sometimes an idea just pops into your head. What about a PINK quilt? I had to order fabrics, and I wrestled with the tiny background diamonds next to the bright ones, but it turned out just the way I wanted. It looks really great on my dining room table. My Mother loved the Tickled Pink diamond quilt (above) so much, she asked if she could have it. I said no. I thought, I'll make her a scrab slab quilt. But I didn't really want to do that either. Looking around my studio, still messy from finishing the pink one, I saw all the discarded pieces and thought, what would happen if I used those... Well, Dairy Cream (with Sprinkles) happened. This is Glorious, a collaboration between my friend Julie Sefton and me. We used her color inspiration, chose the fabrics together, and then collaborated by email, text and a couple of very long telephone conversations to design the quilt together. This is Glorious, quilted. Julie added the binding, and you can see the quilt finished here. This is Blu, the blue diamond quilt. I made the top in July 2018 and finished it in May 2019. Here's a full view of the quilt top before it was quilted. When your granddaughter asks for a diamond quilt with dinosaurs, the proper grandmother answer is YES DEAR! I wanted this quilt to be little girl friendly, bright and colorful, and have dinosaurs, but not be overly dino-centric. I do need to stress that in these quilts, I want the viewer to first get the experience of the color first, and then to realize the quilt is made of three sizes of diamonds, and how they break up, and come back together, and then finally, all the different fabrics.

This is the quilt in five big chunks. Here it is after I have sewn the big chunks together and completed the top. It's going to be a really pretty quilt. Just a reminder that my diamond quilts are inspired by Pam Goecke Dinndorf's Harlequin Quilt. She sells a pattern for it here. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ By the way, I got irked at the guy at the big box store because he did NOT listen to what I asked. I told him I wanted a work light to illuminate a wall six feet wide by eight feet tall from a distance of about between 10 and 12 feet. Then I showed him a picture of my design wall. "Is this inside or outside? Is this a dining room?" "It's inside, and it isn't a dining room. Why does it matter what kind of room it is? It's a work room. It's a studio. I don't need to install it permanently and I only need to use it when I take photographs." He held up his hands, "I'm not trying to offend you." "Well you're doing a pretty crappy job. I described exactly what I needed and you didn't listen to me." He sighed. "OK, let's look at lights..." When I had the little box in my hand, I looked at him. "Men do this all the time. They minimize what women do. And most women just take it. I make quilts, and I make money at it. My tools are important. I know a lot of quilters who don't have good tools or good lighting who work on a rickety ironing board and bend over a dining room table that's too low. Yet the men have every power tool known to man, table saws and riding lawn mowers. When I come to a hardware store to buy tools, the men try to sell me cheap crap. It's really aggravating." "If that light doesn't work, bring it back," he told me. Well, it works, so I won't have to bring it back. In fact, I went back later and bought a second one for my travel kit. The guy wasn't there, or I would have told him just how great the little light really is.

I'm pretty pleased with myself because not only do I have a finish for Friday, but I also have a quilt top together and all four of my goals for this Q2 of #wipsbegone2021 complete with lots of time to spare! I've made several of these over the years, most recently three to sell in my Etsy shop, SandraJaneQuilts. I sold the aqua one in short order. In early September I had one of those days when you just feel like going off-topic and playing a bit, I grabbed what was left of a Gooseberry by Bonnie and Camille mini charm pack, and made the two sides. I'd used half of it in a little pouch I made for my friend Tish. And there it sat. Why? No matching zipper! So, I did a little research and found an Etsy shop out of eastern Quebec who sells packs of zippers of varying colours and sizes, DeCousuCa. I ordered a pack of 25 and two singles, one lavender and one mint green. They're great, a great price, and arrived quickly. This is one of four mini charm packs I bought from Fat Quarter Shop several years ago, one of which I turned into one of the three makeup pouches in my shop. I thought I'd turn another one of them into a pouch as well. I like boxed bottom on bags. These hold a fair bit as you can see from the video I made on the listing. I'm glad I'm in the PHD Quilter programme, and now the #wipsbegone because I knew I had to finish this little project I'd started. It didn't take that long. I used a bit of the leftover Gooseberry Tish had sent me to line it. Not enough of any of the prints was left, so I took two matching ones in different colours and made the lining with them. I like this! Here's the other side, similar, but not identical. Such happy fabric! It is quilted with turquoise variegated Aurifil, which works well on all the prints. Quilt Stats: Pattern: Mini charm pouch by Moda Bakeshop Size: 9.5" wide at the top by 6" high Fabric: Gooseberry by Bonnie and Camille for Moda Fabrics Backing: as above Batting: Hobbs 100% polyester scrap Quilted: on my Bernina Threads: pieced with Aurifil; quilted with Aurifil variegated 50 wt I said at the beginning of the post that I had completed all four of my goals for this quarter: The only one left is the RSC Bow ties quilt top. Those who follow me on Instagram would have seen this yesterday, but here it is for my blog readers. I absolutely love how it turned out. I tried a few iterations of the rainbow effect. Warm colours on the diagonal through the centre (on the left) or yellow in the centre, surrounded by warm colours, radiating out to the four corners in cool colours (on the right): Since I had no hard and fast plan with the quilt (I usually don't with RSC quilts, which can lead to some really fun surprises for quilt tops), I had to work with the blocks I'd made (49, so one will go on the back since I decided on a six by eight layout about three-quarters of the way through the year). In the end, I went with the layout you see, top right half warm colours, bottom left cool colours, having the 'light', the yellows mainly along the diagonal. I had 25 warm blocks and 24 cool, not bad for not much of a plan! This is out of the book, Classic to Contemporary String Quilts by Mary M. Hogan. I made Delia from it too. Both of my quilts are different layouts than hers, not that hers are not pleasing! I used her designs as a jumping-off point. This will appear on another #wipsbegone list, as it has to be totally finished by the end of the year in order to qualify for my PHD Quilter!
