Black Howler Monkey (Allouata pigra) Most often heard around sunrise, much more a roar than a howl, announcing one's position as a means to avoid conflict with other groups; may be heard up to 3 mi away. Live in groups of 3-19 (avg 7-9) usually 1-3 males for every 7-9 females. Spend most of their time in the trees, only come down for water during dry spells. Sleeping or resting up to 70% of the day, these are the most laid back monkeys of the New World.
