Our mill focuses on hand made treads for clients with any size or shape stair tread, landing, and/or runner. Natural Characteristics of Sisal Sprouts – Short fibers that were tucked in during the manufacturing process. Seagrass, jute, and hemp are short fibers. During handling, they sprout. Clipping sprouts is recommended. Variation in Loop Size – Carpets made of natural fibers may have irregular yarns that can create appearance of a variance in loop size (warp or weft yarns). Variations of either thick or thin yarns within 50% of normal are allowed. Shedding of Loose Fibers is Normal – It is a natural result of the process used to create carpets. When floor coverings are produced, a combing process occurs, which helps remove short and broken fibers. However, some fibers fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The shedding can vary depending on the material type. Irregularity in the Ribs – Some ribs will be closer together, some farther apart. Bowing – Industry standard allows up to 2% bowing of woven broadloom carpet. Bowing should be taken into consideration when planning for a seam. Color Changes – Natural fibers eventually return to their original color. Bleached products darken over time, and dyed fibers fade. Avoid direct sunlight. Color Variance – Showroom samples may not match current inventory. Roll differences are more significant with natural fibers than synthetic ones. Materials from different rolls are seldom the exact same color. Striation – Color variance lines are normal in natural fiber carpet because color variances occur naturally. Foreign Yarns – This occurs when fibers from previous production find their way into the current yarn. This is due to the nature of the fiber, collection process, and weaving process. Foreign yarn is common in all natural fiber products. Expansion & Contraction – The hydroscopic nature of natural fibers means they adjust to environmental conditions, they are constantly moving. Loose-lay for 24 hours in the room in which it will be installed, and at the temperature it will typically experience. This allows the fibers to acclimate to their new surroundings. Visible Seam – These are normal, even when seaming is done well. For Indoor Use Only – Natural fiber products should not be used in areas where moisture is present or ventilation is inadequate. Residential Use – All products are recommended for residential use only unless otherwise specified.

So you want a stair runner but you have a platform or you need extra for the hallway or landing? Tricky? Possibly, as it will need to be specially cut. Nothing is straight forward is it?! Well, maybe we can help at Fenston Carter. (We are pretty sure we are the only place on the internet that provides this service!) If you have a staircase that stops turns 90 degrees and continues this is called a platform. Similarly, if you have a landing in between 2 sets of stairs that you want a floor runner for so you can continue the carpet between floors, then we can help. WhatsApp Most platforms are pretty straight forward to cut. In which case, just send us a WhatsApp with a video or image of the platform along with the measurements you want the width of the runner to be (it will need to match the width of your runner). We will take it form there and be back in touch. More complicated? It will still be possible to make you a more intricated runner here but we may need a template to cut from. Fear not, get in touch and we will guide you through that process but in a nutshell it's called... Templating. To work out the shape you need this carpet cut to it needs to be templated. It can be a DIY undertaking but if you are not practically minded or you don't have the time or patience them probably best to employ the services of a carpet fitter who can do it for you. You will need templating paper, a pencil, sticky tape and a tape measure and or a ruler. Luckily we have a templating kit you can buy on Etsy here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1571146016/template-kit-for-carpet-stair-runnersand we have a made a video for you here on how to template a platform for a runner (comes with the kit). Once you have made the template, put it back in the tube, attach the pre-paid postage sticker and pop it in the post, we'll take it from here.
