The Pennsylvania Railroad is famed for its GG1 electric locomotives, but casual observers might be surprised to learn how extensive Pennsy’s electric operations were. This colourful cover shows what was described as a 'vital part' of the BR Modernisation Plan - the extension of electrified lines, something British railways had arguably lagged behind in. The scene purports to be that of the Manchester - Sheffield - Wath elecrification, the 1500v DC scheme that was started before the 2nd World War but wasn't completed until the 1950s. By then BR had decided to electrify at 25kv ac - and this line was eventually, and many would say criminally, abandoned - leaving no cross-Pennine route electrified. The image is of interest as not only does it show the 26000 class for goods and the 27000 class loco for passenger services against a busy industrial scene but it is by the French artist Albert Brenet (1903 - 2005), the French transport and marine artist, who was commissioned by SNCF for many posters and publciity images.
