"The Last Pickle" is a painting of a grumpy pickle that will put a smile on your face.
About The Artwork This piece includes imagery taken from digital iconography, like a mouse, play button, and a rewind button, and words like ‘screen’, ‘T.V.’, ‘shuffle’. The scrappy, unrefined brush marks of the painting juxtapose the digital imagery it reflects, ironically commenting on the inhuman nature of the digital world we are so engrossed by. At the time of producing this piece I was reading ‘The Creativity Code’ by Marcus Du Sautoy, a book that comments on quickly evolving AI. The fundamental difference, Sautoy speculates, between human intelligence and machine intelligence, is creativity. Sautoy says, however, that due to the newly developed model of the ability to learn that has been programmed into some AI they may not be as far off from this trait as we think. The crocodile in the centre of the painting represents our fear of AI or the new digital age and it slowly encroaching into our lives like a predator. The menacing tone of the piece’s title is meant to be off putting, contrasted by its vibrant colours, creating a contradictory mix of emotions.
