How to Use a Japanese Style Pull Saw: I wanted to have a quick chat about pull-saws. They are really different than western saws, and I've become a big fan. There are two sides to this type of saw, one for cuts along the grain and one for across the grain. The fine-toothed one is for c…
8 3/8" Tall Shoji/Kumiko Style Lamp made from Cherry and Basswood Shoji is generally used as a translucent screen consisting of a wooden frame covered in rice paper, or as a sliding door or partition in a Japanese home. Kumiko is a woodworking and design technique generally based on shapes found in nature. Kumiko is made from many narrow strips of wood all hand fitted into patterns. This pattern is comprised of 74 individual pieces of Basswood. Each piece is cut and beveled to the proper length and angle and then each piece is hand fitted and glued in its panel. The panel is backed with a Japanese translucent paper and the panels are then assembled. Rails and Stiles are made from Cherry and the Kumiko is made from Basswood. The lamp is approximately 8 3/8" tall x 5" wide x 5" deep (21.3cm x 12.7cm x 12.7cm) The Basswood used for Kumiko is generally not finished with any stains or oils. The natural color of the wood is deemed desirable. Basswood may darken a little over time. We do finish the Cherry with a natural Tung oil. This provides protection as well as beauty to the Cherry. The lamp comes with a 120V "dimmable" on/off switch and a 25W lamp bulb + a spare bulb. (Additional bulbs can be purchased on Amazon). Unfortunately for the second half of 2022 we had to raise our prices due to the large increase in the cost of wood. Lamp is handcrafted in Akron, Ohio
