July 25, 2014, 12:35 AM A few months ago Matt Pollock and I met up and spent a week with Vincent Lawrence of www.acadiaimages.com in Acadia National Park testing a lot of new gear, including a Nikon D810, Nikon Df, AstroTrac, various panning heads, and some new timelapse hardware and software. This was one of the first Milky Way test shots we took comparing the D700, D800, D810, and Df. Cloud cover quickly rolled in, making the test rather pointless. Vincent is down on the rocks with his Canon 5D Mark II. This is a composite of two exposures: 30 seconds for the sky and 240 seconds for the ground, manually blended in Photoshop. Shot at 14mm, f/2.8, and ISO 4000. RAW conversion was done with Lightroom with a 3667° white balance. Equipment used: Nikon D700, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, Promote Control, Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod and BH-40 ballhead with camera L plate.
The Sadr region in Cygnus contains lots of emission nebulae that is revealed through long exposure astrophotography. He is an example using a Canon DSLR.

Though current solar activity cycle is the weakest in a century it has brought us some really amazing lights in the night sky these past years. I photographed these Northern lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, in Southern Ostrobothnia, Finland between years 2013 and 2015. More info: joniniemela.
