My Christmas present to myself this year was a Silhouette Cameo. They were running a great deal over Thanksgiving that I posted on Facebook and I just couldn't say no! Since then, my life has resembled the following: Yes, it's really that bad.... I stocked up on a lot of vinyl, both during their sale and at www.craftvinyl.com. On craftvinyl.com I bought both the Oracal 631 and 651. One thing I love about the 651 is that even though it shouldn't go on walls, it's great for going on plastic and classroom items since it can withstand lots of abuse. (Disclaimer: Silhouette & craftvinyl.com don't know me, I just really like them! I purchased all of these items myself.) First up is this great heart-shaped push light that I found at the Dollar Store: I'm not sure if these are regularly stocked or if they were just a special treat since Valentine's Day is around the corner, but I knew it would be the perfect shape to make a thinking/feeling heart! When I am modeling in either Teacher Time or in whole group, I can easily push on the light to show the kids that I am no longer reading aloud but using my brain and heart to think about and feel what's happening in the story. Even in third grade, this was a skill that we used on a weekly basis and the possibilities of using this tool are endless! I would even love to see this used in small groups where students can push the light on to demonstrate their own feelings and thoughts about a particular passage, character, event, etc. This little guy is going straight into my Teacher Time Bin so I can always have quick access to it throughout the year. The font I used for this project was KG Luck of the Irish (available HERE) since it was skinny enough to fit on the tiny space :) Next up is this adorable dual-bucket I found at Hobby Lobby! It was only around $3-$4 and with their iPhone app, I was able to use my coupon and get it 40% off! I used a frame that's a part of the Silhouette Library and the font KG Be Still and Know (available HERE) to make these cute "Sharp" and "Dull" labels. I love how it's now easy to transport pencils anywhere in the classroom, to another room (computer lab, library, etc.), or even outside to work on a project. We don't have to bring out our classroom buckets and this little guy can keep us organized on the go! Tip: I always have the kids leave dull pencils tip-down so it's easier to keep the two buckets distinguishable. I hope these projects give you some ideas for your own classroom, especially if you purchased any type of vinyl cutter this past holiday season. I'll be back with more ideas as I continue my vinyling spree :)

I am all done with parent conferences and it feels great! I had the most terrific year and I’m so happy to share my students’ progress with their parents. During parent conference time, I always love to have lots of student work to display. I absolutely love to incorporate student pictures into student work. This ... Spanish artist Nacho Ormaechea who lives and works in Paris creates beautiful digital collages by filling silhouettes of people photographed on the street with visually contradicting images. Because of the these strange juxtapositions of color, place and subject we’re left wondering what the meaning is. Are these memories or desires of these anonymous people, or are they portals to another place and time? Head over to his website to see more. More
