Crocheting a star may seem challenging, but here I take all the guesswork out on how to make a star with my crochet star garland pattern.
These stars make a statement! Large enough to be seen, and yet subtly colored - so fun, lighthearted and festive. The starry garland is cut from pages of a vintage book which we then stitched together to create a piece of streamer that is just over 10 feet long. We've attached small loops of satin ribbon to the ends for ease of hanging. Each star measures 4" from tip to tip Since it is made from vintage paper, the colors of this garland are very subtle and could be used for any occasion - or all year long! It is light weight and flutters in a slight breeze - it would be gorgeous hung along a wall or hung from a ceiling beam, at a wedding, in a child's room, between two trees for a party or photo shoot, or adorning a mantle piece or banister! Feel free to contact us with requests for greater quantities, shorter/longer lengths or different papers/colors - welove custom orders!)

One of the many things I love about Brown Owls is taking the time out to explore a craft I've never really dabbled in before. It's great for the creative bits of my brain to take a break from stitching and learn something new. Last month we had a fab meet up making paper garlands, the one above that I'm still finding bits of time to work on, (check out the tutorial here) was my favourite, it's quick and simple and will look super cute for my market stall display. Plus you could use any shape to make them, hearts, snowflakes, clouds, the world is your oyster! There's so many possibilities for paper garlands especially when you venture into the world of origami, here are a few of my favourites. Guusje Appeltaart's MYO Rocket Garland Tutorial is so cute and I love that it combines handmade stamps (more on those soon) with paper craft. Origami garlands always look really effective, I love these little stars from Currently Coveting but what I love even more is the way she cleverly uses an ombre dying effect to create gorgeous hues of blue. Simple shapes in bold colours look equally fab, a little cutting and stitching and voila! I really love these garlands made by Weekday Carnival. Hanging strings of paper flowers or leaves make a gorgeous back drop, these pom pom vines are so adorable hanging on trees. And I love the use of an old branch for this backdrop, tutorial and flower template can be found at ellinée journal. Flagging this one for my little sister's wedding :) And another great thing about paper garlands, it's an awesome way to use up paper scraps or recycle old magazines, damaged books, junk mail and newspapers, everyone wins! :)
This mini clay star garland is so easy to make with homemade clay made using ingredients that you already have in your pantry. This is a standard and common recipe that uses a 2:1 ratio of baking soda to cornstarch. It can be easily adjusted as needed. We made around 140 mini stars using the

If you are interested in purchasing star garlands please check out my Etsy store! There are many colors available and they are ready to ship. More pictures on Facebook I mentioned a while back that I was going to use this tutorial to try and create an ombre effect on the paper star garlands I was making. I did a test run and it worked! I'm pretty happy with the results, happy enough that I don't even mind that it looks like I murdered a smurf. It's a pretty easy process but a messy one. I bought some RIT dye and eyeballed a small portion into a mason jar. I sprinkled some salt in there and heated some water up on the stove. Initially I added a little bit of water in order to create a concentrated color and then submerged part of the garland. I had to push it down into the dye because the stars ended up floating on top. I put more of the garland on top of what was already in there until a decent amount was piled on top but didn't push it down into the dye. Instead I added more water to dilute the color and repeated the process until the entire garland was dyed. As soon as I had pushed the last star into the dye I immediately took out the garland and hung it up to dry. I jerry rigged an extra shower curtain rod I had been using in one of my closets in the newspaper lined bathtub for the garland to dry. The dye that splattered on the tub wiped off easily with a magic eraser type sponge. My hands, not so much. I'm contemplating scrubbing them with that sponge. I bought a few other colors and am excited to try them out. I'll update again with the final results. *Side note - do you ever have a "Holy crap it actually worked!" moment when a craft turns out exactly how you hoped it would? I totally had that moment and maybe had a mental fist pump going for a minute. Please don't judge me.
