Last fall April and I wanted to start getting our hands dirty, mud caked fingernails, sweaty foreheads, outdoor punishment. We have always been a little green around the thumb with planting our flower gardens, but we wanted more. First step for me is always research.... Learn something everyday is my motto. I went to my most favorite location to start my research. What would the world do without this place? Every time April and I are like, "So...what do you want to do tonight?" It will inevitably lead us to the front doors of B&N. Now that my research can begin I make my way to the gardening section, it takes a real man to sit down next to six women and look at garden books. Two of these women glanced over at me with a half snicker in the corner of their lips. On with the research... I found the most amazing book called "The Backyard Homestead" which could potentially lead April and I down the path of being farm folk. Below is the idea that we are after for our layout. The house even kind of looks like our house and yard layout. Basically this would be our goal for the next 1-3 years of getting it ready. Because we live within city limits though we would need to nix the pigs :-( The next thing on my list is the removal of a couple of trees in the back yard and starting the construction of the raised beds. Today though I am going to be working on a project for a friend of mine. I am turning an old piano from 1930ish into a TV stand. I will post pictures as the project comes along. Happy research to everyone and keep learning something.

In a world where food production is dominated by large-scale industrial agriculture, it's heartening to see that there are still families out there who are taking matters into their own hands and growing their own food. One such family is the Dervaes family of Pasadena, California. They've managed to grow an astonishing 6,000 pounds of food a year on just 1/10 of an acre of land, and they've been doing it for over three decades. Dateline: 10 February 2014 (click on pictures to see larger views) Two of the ten gardens that make up the 1.5 acre micro-farm known as Les jar dines de La Grelinette (photo link) I don’t know how Jean-Martin Fortier happened to send me a copy of his new book, The Market Gardener, but I’m sure glad he did. The book is a delightful challenge to my recent assertion (Sage Advice For Would-Be Farmers) that “farming is an almost-impossible business to get into and succeed at.” Jean-Martin, his wife, and their two children live in the middle of a 1.5 acre micro-farm in Quebec, Canada. The farm consists of a greenhouse and ten gardens, containing a total of 180 permanent raised beds (each bed is 30” wide by 100’ long, with 18” walkways). The micro-farm, named Les jardines de La Grelinette (Grelinette is French for broadfork), has been in operation ten years. They have a CSA that supplies 140 families with produce for 21 weeks a year, and they sell at two farmer’s markets. Last year they sold $140,000 worth of produce. In This Podcast Jean-Martin makes it clear that they are selling at reasonable prices. And in his book he states that their profit margin is over 40%. Using a wheel hoe for weed control at Les jardines de La Grelinette (photo link) In other words, Jean-Martin Fortier and his family are making a decent living as market gardeners on only 1.5 acres of land. Furthermore, they do not own a conventional tractor; the farm is maintained with a 2-wheel, walk-behind tractor and hand tools. Jean-Martin says that the farm is more efficient without a conventional tractor, wagons, bucket loaders, and etc. If you, or anyone you know, has any interest in making a living as a micro-farmer market gardener, you must read Jean-Martin’s, The Market Gardener. In the book, Jean-Martin shares what he has learned over the years, and how he now operates his micro-farm. The Market Gardener is loaded with valuable perspectives and ideas. To be an aspiring market gardener and not read this book would be, in my opinion, foolish. Even though I am only a home gardener, I loved the book because it presents a proven example of micro-farming success. It is an inspiring contribution to a hopeful vision for the future of community-based, family-centered sustainable agriculture, which happens to be something I have a big interest in. Besides that, I liked this book because I learned some techniques that I can (and will) apply to my home garden. Maude-Helene and Jean-Martin at Les jardines de La Grelinette (photo link) I encourage you to go to The Market Gardener web site and check it out. You can watch an excellent YouTube book trailer. You can read the beginning pages and the first chapter of the book. And you can buy a copy directly from the author (which is always the best way to purchase a book). Also, I encourage you to check out this YouTube clip: Jean-Martin Fortier on Starting to Farm
