The DITIPIRAM (8-propyldithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-e]pyridine-3,5-diamine)-based receptors 11 and 12 were readily synthesized, and their anion-binding properties were studied both in solution and in the solid-state. 1H NMR titrations revealed that receptor 12 equipped with two phenyl-urea groups preferentially binds carboxylates, even in the highly competitive DMSO-d6/CD3OH solvent mixture. X-ray analysis showed that receptor 12 exhibited great complementarity for benzoate, which is cooperatively bound by the means of four highly directional hydrogen bonds from the two urea groups. Comparison with the most effective acyclic receptors based on a structurally related rigid carbazole platform demonstrates that the DITIPIRAM motif provides a better suited geometry in the binding pocket, and consequently stronger anion binding.

Iodo-bodipy/rhodamine dyads with cyanuric chloride linker were prepared with the goal of achieving pH switching of the triplet excited state formation. The pH switching takes advantage of the acid-activated reversible cyclic lactam↔opened amide transformation of the rhodamine unit and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The photophysical properties of the dyads were studied with steady-state and femtosecond/nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopies, electrochemical methods, as well as TD-DFT calculations. Our results show that the model dyad is an efficient triplet state generator under neutral condition, when the rhodamine unit adopts the closed form. The triplet generation occurs at the iodo-bodipy moiety and the triplet state is long-lived, with a lifetime of 51.7 μs. In the presence of the acid, the rhodamine unit adopts an opened amide form, and in this case, the efficient FRET occurs from iodo-bodipy to the rhodamine moiety. The FRET is much faster (τFRET = 81 ps) than the intersystem crossing of iodo-bodipy (τISC = 178 ps), thus suppressing the triplet generation is assumed. However, we found that the additional energy transfer occurs at the longer timescale, which eventually converts the rhodamine-based S1 state to the T1 state localized on the iodo-bodipy unit.

An intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation via a one-pot process is described, which induces selective C–C bond formation and bromine functionalization. The application of this new route gives rise to a novel family of partially fused, selectively brominated N-doped pyrimidine graphenes.
A series of systematical designed host materials based on dibenzothiophene (DBT) were synthesized. Their physical properties were comprehensively characterized and compared with classic carbazole analogues. The different electron donating abilities of DBT and carbazole play an important role in the structure–property correlations. In this report, we demonstrate that the charge transport balance of host materials can be manipulated by utilizing the less electron-donating nature of DBT with proper design. Both the experimental data and theoretical calculations indicated possible bipolar property in meta-linked materials based on DBT. Through single carrier devices, an atypical bipolar transporting property was found in m-TPDBT. The meta- and ortho-linked DBT based materials exhibit decent performance in FIrpic based PHOLEDs. The best performed m-TPDBT was used as host in white phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (PHOLEDs). Promising results were achieved with both double and single emitting layer configurations. A maximum power efficiency of 41.0 lm W–1 was achieved for warm white devices.

We report a novel photoreversible color switching system based on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanocrystals and the redox-driven color switching property of methylene blue (MB). This system rapidly changes from blue to colorless under UV irradiation and recovers its original blue color under visible light irradiation. We have identified four major competing reactions that contribute to the photoreversible switching, among which two are dominant: the decoloration process is mainly driven by the reduction of MB to leuco MB by photogenerated electrons from TiO2 nanocrystals under UV irradiation, and the recoloration process operates by the TiO2-induced self-catalyzed oxidation of LMB under visible irradiation. Compared with the conventional color switching systems based on photoisomerization of chromophores, our system has not only low toxicity but also significantly improved switching rate and cycling performance. It is envisioned that this photoreversible system may promise unique opportunities for many light-driven actuating or color switching applications.
The direct synthesis of pentafluoroethyl copper (CuC2F5) from a cuprate reagent and ethyl pentafluoropropionate as one of the most economical and useful pentafluoroethyl sources was accomplished. The advantages of this method are; all the reagents employed are low-cost and operationally simple, and the CuC2F5 reagent is prepared in virtually quantitative yield. Furthermore, the CuC2F5 reagent prepared was successfully applied to two types of pentafluoroethylations with arylboronic acids and aryl bromides to provide the pentafluoroethylated aromatic products in good-to-excellent yields, including large scale operations.
Complex metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that maintain high structural order promise sophisticated and tunable properties. Here, we build on our strategy of using combinations of structurally distinct ligands to generate a new isoreticular series of ordered quaternary Zn4O–carboxylate MOFs. Rational design of the framework components steers the system toward multicomponent MOFs and away from competing phases during synthesis. Systematic ligand modulation led to the identification of a set of frameworks with unusually high stability toward water vapor. These frameworks lose no porosity after 100 days’ exposure to ambient air or 20 adsorption–desorption cycles up to 70% relative humidity. Across this series of frameworks, a counterintuitive relationship between the length of pendant alkyl groups and framework stability toward water vapor emerges. This phenomenon was probed via a series of gas and vapor adsorption experiments together with Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, and could be rationalized on the basis of the propensity of the frameworks to adsorb water vapor and the proximity of the adsorbed water molecules to the water-sensitive metal clusters. Systematic variation of the pore volume and topography also tunes the CO2 and CH4 gas adsorption behavior. Certain of these materials display increases in their adsorption capacities of 237% (CO2) and 172% (CH4) compared to the parent framework.
