We had so much fun celebrating our big guy turning three this weekend! The past few months in our house have been ALL about Despicable Me and his favorite characters, the minions. So, it was easy to pull together a theme for this one! Jackson was so excited about his minion party, and I had so much fun planning all of the details! 'Despicable Three' was my favorite theme ever :-) This is the second banner I have made with these kits from Target. I bought two of them, spray painted, and then just hand painted all of the letters and details with acrylic paint. This might be my favorite banner to make-and I pulled it together for less than $15! I had leftover banner pieces, so I made a 'Jackson' one as well that I threw above the patio door. I just love using my new letterboard, especially for fun occasions like this! Jackson's actual birthday was Thursday, so we let him open his 'minion' presents that night from mommy and daddy. He got to wear his new minion Hawaiian shirt that looked 'just like daddy', and got pizza and cupcakes TWICE. It was a good birthday by any toddler standards ;-) The day of the party was Saturday. We spent the morning and naptime decorating before guests arrived! This is just crepe paper and balloons, but it is by far the most fun our staircase has ever looked ;-) I am SO happy with how these cupcakes turned out! I just piped blue frosting, and then cut twinkies in half, secured candy eyes, and draw the detailing in black icing. They were really SUPER easy to make! And we needed something that would hold the big candle I bought, so a minion cake with yellow lemon frosting and oreos eyes was also on the menu. All ingredients were made from scratch...from the box or tub ;-) Seriously, grocery store tub frosting is the best! Paper goggles on our beverage dispensers added some fun. These were in pretty much every store with a party section, and were only $1.99! My sister in law loves to draw 'sidewalk chalk art', so she drew this for Jackson. Seriously, how amazing did this turn out!? This was the first birthday where Jackson really understood opening presents, being sung to, and blowing out the candles. It was so much fun to see him really get excited about it being his birthday for the first time! And he complied and gave his round of 'thank you' hugs after opening gifts, it was so sweet! Seriously. SO EXCITED. I love this picture! He was so serious about blowing out the candle, and daddy stepped in to help. We had the best time celebrating our sweet guy! I am still in a bit of disbelief that he is three, but I have a feeling that this is going to be my favorite age yet! Linking up with Biana today! Tweet

The first time I saw the movie Despicable Me I fell in love and it easily took first place in my heart as my favorite movie. It is one of the few movies I can watch again and again and enjoy it every time. Yes I suppose it's not very becoming that an adult should be so hooked by a movie essentially made for children, but I honestly believe animation, despite the perception people have of it, is actually evolving to be targeted at both children and adults. Or maybe that's what I need to tell myself. Never the less my childish spirit makes me proud to admit my love for Despicable Me so much so that for my birthday last year I had a Despicable Me party. I was so excited when I heard they were making a second Despicable me, but nervous as well in case I was let down. I should have known by that hilarious promo of the minions that it was going to awesome again. I loved the second movie as much as the first and with all the buzz and hype around the film I thought I should maybe share some of the photos from my party last year, which I never got round to doing. Admittedly the photos are horrible as the party was at night and I was a little pre-occupied so many things weren't photographed, but here are some of the things that were... Unfortunately for my birthday cake I didn't have time to put on the finer details I normally would as I was busy with work and had to squeeze in my own party preparation whenever I could. I still love the amount of minions on the cake though (you can never have enough minions) and I was happy with the way my moon came out, obviously a big plot point from the first film. My favorite part of this cake however was the birthday message to myself quoted from the film, "why are you so old". The irony of me having a kiddies theme for my 26th birthday was not lost on me and there is really no reason not to laugh at yourself in life. I had other theme related food at my party as well. I used fondant to turn normal choc chip cookies into cookie robots I also had to have the sweets in the dog bowl just like Gru had for the girls when he brought them home the first time. Don't worry this is a brand new dog bowl bought especially for the occasion. Then chocolate brownies acted as the mud pie Edith gives Miss Hatty and of course I had to have Agnes' unturned butterflies The party food couldn't be complete without some minion cupcakes. The minions also played an important role in my decor. I hand painted these and had them making appearances all over the party area. For the photos however I just have them in a row to get them all in. My best friend also managed to get some promotional minions from a dvd rental shop. These were great to string all over the place. If you can get your hands on these kinds of things they really make for easy effective decor. I also set up a gazebo area that acted as Gru's lab and our drinking head quarters. I had all kinds of bottles and test tube looking items to simulate a laboratory environment. I also had posters of Gru's plan to steal the moon, which I drew from the movie, including the one the girl's drew of Gru on the toilet, but unfortunately I never took a photo of these. My favorite item of all the decor however was an amazing birthday gift my genius boyfriend made for me. A 3D minion! I ended up using him as a table centre piece. And because we are all big kids at heart I also had to have an activity to keep the restless amongst us entertained. I wanted to have the game from the amusement park in the film where Gru wins the fluffy unicorn for Agnes. I cut out the alien from cardboard and then found inexpensive plastic guns which shot foam balls. Hitting that alien is harder than you think. I had an absolutely despicable party and my only regret is I didn't take more photos, but I did have an amazing time. I can't wait to do another Despicable Me party for this second film so to all you Cape Townians out there I'm ready when you are;) I have subsequently gotten an order for a minion cake, but I'm still waiting to get my hands on a full Despicable me party. However here are some pics of my latest despicable creation.

Have a brother or sister who's craaazy about Despicable Me? Or are you crazy yourself? Understandable. Despicable Me is the most perfect movie ever. And bringing it to life in your party is even more exciting! I threw a surprise graduation party for my little brother who just finished elementary school. (yes, surprise. & yes, it was the hardest thing to prepare for especially him being around all the time) Well, here are some ideas you can use to create this despicable party. -Invitations? I just used Photoshop and created this out of scratch. Leave a comment with your email address if you need the PDF file to customize. Lesson learnt: Should have used a white cardboard paper for the outside. -Goodie Bags? I bought yellow paper sacks from Michaels to make this. I printed out goggles according to the bag size and created the mouth and hair with a black sharpie. -Party Favors? I kept small goodies such as goggles and tattoos which I simply purchased from Party City as part of the party favors and kept the "minion gadgets" label between them and the goodie bags. Other party favors? I also kept water guns for the boys and lipsticks for the girls that I had bought from the dollar store. I had the perfect labels to go with it. My friend cut out the "Gru made these for the boys" part while taking this picture. Apologeez. Same with this label, "Lucy made these for the girls). Apologeez again. -Party Sign is sooo necessary! -Favorite part, FOOD! I had A LOT of snacks for the kids, and I mean a lot. By the time the cake came around, no one wanted to eat it. And the best part, all the food fit into the theme. Have a look: Just regular chocolate chip cookies that fit into theme from the first Despicable Me movie. I used cotton candy for this. This has to be the hardest part of the party. I bought marshmallows and then I bought candy melt and candy eyes from Michaels. Using a small spatula, I covered the marshmallows with the candy melt. At the end, used black icing to make the hair and glued the eyeballs. These are popcorn balls. Recipe can be found easily on Google. Using purple cellophane paper and twisty ties from Michaels can be made into this. All you need is a vase and printed evil minion goggles and mouth. All you need is a yellow drink and a label that says anti-gravity serum and you'll have flying kids in no time. Cake courtesy: Sams Club, thank you. The cake was great. -The decorations? I swear I didn't forget. Fortunately, I got sick the day of and couldn't do the preparations I wanted to because of my weakness. This is the best I could do. I used a yellow fabric, some blue streamers and Despicable Me balloons bought from Party City. That should do the trick. My mom really wanted to add this deflated graduation cap balloon even though I didn't want to. Should have took a picture of it before. Oh wellz. & Voila! There you go, your Despicable Me Party! (Almost forgot, table cover is also from Party City) -Games? Although I didn't take any pictures, I can just list the games we played. My brother had a minion stuffed toy so we played, "Pass the Minion" AKA Hot Potato. I bought "Pin the Goggles on the Minion" from Party City. And of course, a ritual game of musical chairs with the "Happy" song playing in the back. All minion themed. I also bought a pinata from Walmart. You can purchase all the food labels, favor tags, party sign and cupcake toppers on Etsy.com for just $7.99 https://www.etsy.com/listing/207313712/despicable-me-party-printables?ref=shop_home_active_1
