The gisants of Pierre d'Évreux-Navarre (+1412) and his wife Catherine d'Alençon (+1462) once adorned their tomb which could be seen in the choir of the église de la Chartreuse in Paris, a church that got destroyed during the French Revolution. They were carved around 1412/1415 and show contemporary armour and clothing of the time. Pierre's early full plate armour is basic and smooth: the poleyns (knee cops) show no lames in between the greaves and the cuisses. But the back of his knees are protected by lames instead of mail, a very modern feature. Also no traces of decoration can be found, except for the border with rivets at the end of his vambraces. A mail collar protects Pierre's neck. He would have worn a 'great bascinet' (which had plate defences for the throat instead of a mail aventail). His loosely worn surcoat covers his armour but does show an early 'fauld' (protection for the lower body consisting of horizontal lames) which ends in a point. A fauld was always attached to a breastplate or a cuirass so we can be very sure that underneath the surcoat Pierre's torso is completely encased in plate armour.
