Because they were relatively quick and easy to construct, bungalow-style homes were all the rage in the 1920s, and homeowner Jessica Small’s (@fromgrittopearl) 1920s home is no exception. Its Craftsman details, such as the unique windows, thick wooden trim, beadboard ceilings, and original hardwood flooring, sold her on the home the minute she walked in, but they needed some major restoration work.

One of the greatest couples on this earth we referred to us by our dear Ohana, Miranda. Her parents needed to make the bathroom in their 1920's bungalow more usable and create a better layout for their current lifestyle. After some time walking through the cute tiny little home, the wheels started spinning and we both went to work coming up with a more modern plan that was still true to the 20's style of the bathroom. I am so excited that Todd and I get to live out our dream of working together on a project like this! Here are the before pictures: The bathtub was an old clawfoot tub that had been tiled over. Notice where the towel rack is. Because in the after pictures, it is no longer there. Behind that wall is a closet that Todd tore out to create space for the new vanity. That is it. That is all there was to this cute little bathroom. Believe it or not, that one bathroom was all that a family of five had for years!!! A few weeks of hard labor (Todd did all of the work with intermitent help by family members...I learned how to use a tile saw and lay tile! Yeah!!!) and this is the end result: You no longer walk into the vanity, and the old tile was chiseled out, the bathtub removed and a shower with a bench and classic white subway tile was installed. Custom shelving, pedestal sink and pull out base cabinets with some spiffy accent lighting! The family are HUGE Yankee fans, so we made sure that we kept some of their favorite memorabilia was tastefully displayed. Ah! A nice place to sit after a long day at work. As a little addition to the project, Todd took out a hall closet and plumbed, wired and ventilated it for a stackable washer and dryer. No longer needing to go up and down the stairs to do laundry! The homeowners were so grateful and excited for the finished result. We love you Sandy & Lyle!!! Thanks for trusting UL Studios with this remodel.

DON’T MESS WITH THE CHARM OF AN OLD HOME My main priority as I enter the world of renovations is to preserve and showcase the charm of my 1920’s 2-story home. I absolutely LOVE the architectural details so I am going to do everything I can to ensure they are not lost in the renovations.

This remodeled home is fit for a king.
For starters, you need a plan.
In researching a bathroom remodel, I found some vintage home magazines from the mid-1920's that show in great detail how well planned and decorative bathrooms had become by that time. I am planning a facelift for the bathroom in my century old bungalow, and while the 1920's were more modern, there are so many ideas in these photos that could work in my small cottage. The sink with twin mirrors flanking the vanity mirror has nice fixtures along with details that we can use as inspiration today in our own homes. This wall elevation reveals typical tile layouts that were used in homes during that time, and may be good for current projects in homes of this age, or where a 'vintage' bathroom look is wanted. The illustration also shows us wall sconces, an ornate vanity mirror, and pedestal sink. Add caption A full bathroom that has both shower and bath was also growing in popularity at that time. These double sets are still found in homes from the 1920's and 30's. The novelty of the built-in shower was balanced by the practical use of a bathtub alcove. While current home decor trends lean towards the use of marble or granite in bathrooms, the tradition of tile has a strong appeal in the older home. There are so many decorative options with tile that are often forgotten today, and its nice to be reminded of how glamorous vintage bathrooms can be.
