Forty years ago, millions of French workers joined protesting students in a general strike that paralyzed the country and nearly brought down the government. A few weeks later, the May 1968 protests fizzled out, but French society was radically changed.
Arrivé à Paris au début des années 1960, Pierre Collombert connut quelques années de chômage avant d’être propulsé dans les événements de Mai 68 : « En mars, je collabore en tant que photographe à La Tribune socialiste, le journal du PSU, raconte-t-il dans l’ouvrage Mai 68, par celles et ceux qui l’ont vécu, coédité par Mediapart. La rédaction me signale le Mouvement du 22 Mars à l’université de Nanterre, où je réalise quelques clichés. » Après un voyage en Tchécoslovaquie en plein Printemps de Prague avec la MJC de Colombes, il parcourt en mai la banlieue à bicyclette : « J’observe les manifestations et l’occupation de quelques usines. Ma vision des événements rejoint ma conception du reportage. Je ne cherche jamais à m’associer à ceux-ci, mais je tente d’immortaliser, à travers le regard des participants, la force de leurs luttes. » Sur quelque 800 clichés pris à cette époque, voici en 30 images son récit d’un printemps qui a aujourd’hui 50 ans.
