2014 was a ridiculously good year for books. Some of our best living writers produced new works this year, which is always cause for crazed celebration; indie publishers turned out NYT Bestsellers like it was no big deal whatsoever; first-time…
I blew through this novel from my YA summer reading list over the weekend, even though it's almost 400 pages. If you loved Eleanor & Park, read this next. It's not a read-alike, but it has enough in common with E&P to make it a safe bet. One of the best books I've read this year.
As a book lover I do tend to like to read a book first before I watch the movie. “We can’t see this movie because I haven’t gotten to the book yet” being one of a few annoying bookworm things my husband is probably sick of hearing me say. I don’t ALWAYS get to the…

What it's about: Everything is perfect; diseases have been eradicated, everyone is equal, and society is under control. Each person is assigned a position by the Community, and 12-year-old Jonas has been picked as the "Receiver of Memories." Only "The Giver" knows the truth of the past, and he must now pass that information down to Jonas. This book has often been described as the first YA dystopian novel (in correlation with the current trend) and it shows that a utopian society has its downsides, like a lack of personal freedom. Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep make this a highly anticipated movie, and hopefully Taylor Swift will prove her acting chops. Amazon review: 4.3/5 stars Release date: Aug. 15, 2014 (Click here to watch the trailer)Starring: Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgård, Taylor Swift

With Memorial Day come the unofficial start of summer—and the yearly scramble to assemble your vacation reading list begins. We've got you covered with the best new books we've read (so far). 1. The Blessings by Elise Juska Remove one branch from the family tree and its whole shape changes. This is the premise behind Elise Juska's debut novel, which captures a stunning wide-angle snapshot of the Blessing family of Northeast Philadelphia. When John Blessing dies, his young widow is left to raise their two young children alone. But, of course, she isn't really alone—she has the support of his opinionated, overstepping family, whose perspectives we hear in alternating chapters spanning the course of 20 years. The effect is reminiscent of time-lapse photography, where hours are collapsed to moments and suddenly a flower blooms before your very eyes. And bloom the Blessings do, despite grudges, resentment, and tense, teary silences at awkward family dinners. They could be any family—and yet, in Juska's capable hands, they're unique and unforgettable. 2. I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You by Courtney Maum Courtney Maum bursts onto the scene with a hilarious and wise novel about a 34-year-old philandering painter who attempts
