Passover Seder Dinner MenuPassover is an eight-day Jewish festival that is celebrated each year in early spring. The first two nights are celebrated with an elaborate Seder feast. Try serving some of the dishes from our Passover Seder Dinner Menu to celebrate.Recipe and Photos by Ellen Easton ©All Rights ReservedThis ancient and traditional Jewish festival commemorates the freedom of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Passover is considered the defining story of Judaism. All religious and non-practicing people of Jewish heritage can relate to this historical event and reflect upon their history and the journey of their ancestors. The first two days and last two days of Passover involve elaborate holiday meals. Also during the entire 8 days, leavened (grains that ferment – wheat, rye, oats, barley and spelt) bread is not permitted to eat. Eating unleavened bread instead during this holiday, symbolizes the unrisen bread the Israelites ate during the eight days journey when they escaped from Egypt. Per Ellen, "Passover, celebrated in the spring, is for some a deeply religious time of the year. For others, it is a time for families and friends to come together at a less compliant Seder dinner to honor their ancestors journey to freedom. There are countless cultures each representing their own unique culinary delicacies. This menu is a combination of traditional, but non Kosher, ceremonial selections with European and Southern influences."Check out more of Ellen Easton's Tea Travels™ articles and recipes.Find more Dinner Party and Holiday Dinner MenusMeaning of the Seder Plate:The Seder plate is the focal point of the table on the first two nights of Passover and it is a fifteen step family oriented tradition and ritual packed feast. In How to Eat, I had a method for cooking roast duck that involved poaching them on the stove, letting them cool and then roasting them in a hot oven. It worked, giving tender meat and fantastically crisp skin, but I am far happier with this method, which dispenses with any wrangling of ducks in boiling water. I still take a two-stage approach, but it’s all low-effort, if not no-effort, and the result is meltingly soft meat and superb quackling. You need add nothing to the duck as it cooks, as both meat and sauce — an aromatic broth of a gravy — provide all the flavour that’s required.
