I hope everyone has gotten back into the routine of school. My kiddos are working hard each day to remember our expectations and daily routines, as well as learning lots of new skills. We started our phonics skills progression two weeks ago. We focused on short a the first week and then short a word families the next week. Each new vowel I am making an anchor poster to display in the room. The kiddos came up with all of the words and then I added the pictures. Anchor charts are such a great visual for our kiddos to remember all the skills they learn each year. Last week I let the firsties make their own anchor charts using our short a word families. They worked in groups to come up with words for their posters and then added pictures to match. They really enjoyed getting to learn these word families in a fun and interactive way! Our next chart focused on text-to-self connections. I borrowed some ideas from my Pinterest board of anchor charts and helped the firsties learn how to connect what they are reading to themselves. My class is doing Whole Brain Teaching this year, so we "Mirrored and echoed" that a text to self connection is when I connect a text to something I've done, something I've felt or something that's happened." My kiddos love earning the points from the Whole Brain system. I would encourage all teachers to look into this fun way of learning. Look out for another post centered on WBT. I changed up our "Me on the Map" unit activity this year, and with the help of some examples from Pinterest I created this one page flip chart activity! My kiddos loved getting to find their place on the map and draw them holding the world! We also learned about the community we live in and who all helps out. I passed out these cute photos of community helpers and let my firsties discuss what each person did to help our community. We then recorded our thoughts and added some more helpers that were not pictured! Check back soon for our short i anchor chart and tips for Whole Brain Teaching! ~Miss A

Do your kiddos love community helpers? Mine sure do, so this theme was a BLAST! These activities and printables come from my Community Helper Pack in my TPT shop. They are perfect for preschool and PreK students. Community Helper Pack Post Office Beginning Sounds- We stared the week by playing post office. Hayden matched the post cards to a stamp with that beginning sound. I attached each stamp with Velcro, and he placed it in our Melissa and Doug mailbox. He LOVED this, and it kept both my boys busy for quite awhile!!! Brush Away the Sugar- Hayden used an old toothbrush to brush away the sugar! Under the layer of sugar, were letters. As he found the letters, he traced them on the recording sheet. Firefighter Shapes- I squirted orange paint into a bag, and zipped it tight! Then we used our shape cards to identify and draw the shapes on the paint bag. Fine Motor Tooth Count- Marshmallows make everything more FUN! Hayden counted to 20 using marshmallow teeth and tongs. Garbage Color Sort- Both of my boys look forward to garbage day, so this was right up their alley! We used a small garbage truck and colorful Legos. Hayden sorted the Legos into the correct colored square. Sight Word Garbage- Next, he fed the garbage can sight words. This also comes with letters! Fire Alphabet Rescue- Fire fighter day was their favorite. Grayson pulled the alphabet fires off of the houses. 911 Craft- The boys worked together to complete a 911 craft with tissue paper. Building Patterns- Hayden constructed patterns with our construction pattern cards, blocks, and paint! Grayson helped, working on identifying shapes! Construction Towers- Hayden used cubes to count and stack towers. Community Helper Puzzles- I always included a puzzle activity, for my little puzzle lover. He completed the community helper puzzles by matching each helper to tools they use. Community Helper Sounds- This was a beginning sound clip card. He clipped a clothespin to a picture with that letter as a beginning sound. Great for fine motor skills too! Subitizing Band- Aids- This was kind of like dominos, but to practice subitizing numbers. Chef Pom Pom Count- pretended to be a chef and counted and created pom pom stew. This activity pack has SO MANY things, we didn't get a chance to do them all. But if you'd like to check it out, the Community Helper Preschool Pack is in my TPT shop! Purchase Community Helper Pack Here is a fun freebie! Band aid shape match. Grab it HERE. I also want to tell you that I updated this resource. Look it up on the Labels section of this blog. Worksheets. Ws 1. After the worksheet is done, have the students each community helper. Prepare 7 small paper plates and some yarn. Glue a community helper on each paper plate. Punch a hole on each paper plate. Attach one another with yarn. Ws 2. Review which items belong to each worker. Then, cut and glue in the corresponding box. Ws 3. Review the family members that work. Students color all the items. On another piece paper have them place all the items that they have previously cut. Have them stand up at the front and talk about their family members. Student: Mom is a police officer. Dad is a fire fighter. Grandma is a chef and Grandpa is a pilot. Ws 4. All the community members have a face and an emotion. Have the students follow your description for each one. Teacher: The police officer has blue eyes. He is happy. Make more combinations for each community member. I made the hats out of construction paper, but on fun foam they would look better. You can also assign a number to each community helper. Make a different hat for each student. Point to each number. Teacher: What number is this ? Students: Three. Teacher: What is she ? Students: She´s a police officer. Call on students and ask questions. Teacher: Patricia, What number are you ? Patricia: I am nine. Teacher: What are you ? Patricia: I am chef. Have the students make a line ordering the numbers in their hats. At your signal, have the students find another student that has the same hat and gather. Teacher: Where are the fire fighters? Students: here!! Teachers: how many firefighters are there ? Students: (count) One, two, three, four. Four Firefighters! And Action! Teacher: Firefighters, stand up ! Police officers, run ! Chefs, dance! Flashcards to complete the theme. I am also preparing more than 300 job flashcards, I will be posting them in my other blog: www.eflelementaryresources.blogspot.com I will always make the letter arts and crafts that you like so much. Cutouts Place the family members cutouts on the board. Add a hat and some items to each one. Teacher: Who is she ? Students: She´s Mommy. Teacher: What does she do ? Students: She´s a cook(chef).
