No study of architecture and engineering would be complete without talking about the Great Pyramids. Egyptian architecture is as mesmerizing in the 21st century as it must have been mystifying when they were constructed. And thanks to Bubble Guppies, a subject of great fascination to my preschool and toddler too! Egyptian Architecture…
This is probably obvious to everybody but me. Science is not my area of expertise, by any means. But it is one of my favourite things to teach in Grade One. I've only just realized that the scientific process is a circle. Or maybe, more accurately, a spiral. A narrowing path up a volcano, passing through the points of the compass with each turning, getting ever closer to the truth of how things are. Of where they begin. And that it all comes back around again and again to asking questions. (Turns out it was in the curriculum all along.) (Some of us have to figure things out for ourselves.)
Joshua Donald of JoshBuilds shared a very simple way to build a mini long-legged robotic bug toy that's mostly made of easily accessible household items.

We have been busy making a large scarecrow for our new outdoor play area and he is finally finished and on display at the local garden show. Meanwhile back in the classroom we have been singing songs about scarecrows, reading stories and drawing pictures of different scarecrows. On the wonder table I set up an abstract farm setting with the paddocks being different square patches of printed fabric. Like an aerial photo of different crops. I cut olive branches (that we pruned on the weekend at home) into lengths that could be used as fences. I added some animals, some of my hand painted pebbles and of course a scarecrow made from recycled paper. I sell a variety of hand painted pebbles on Etsy The pebbles can be used as a display on their own or for the children to hold and discuss. They can be used to prompt story telling or to compliment a play scene like I have done with our farm. They can be used anywhere but I have put them in the water trolley and block area. They allow the children to use their imagination as they do not have a specific function or purpose. They are an open ended resource. We are all trying to use natural resources to teach our children to respect and appreciate the world around us and enjoy the beauty in nature.

I'm popping in real quick to share a few things from the last 2 weeks. Scroll to the bottom for the calendar freebie! 1. 3D FIGURE TRACING BOOK I updated this one this summer and the kids enjoyed tracing the figures and words with the expo markers! This 3D figure tracing book is included in my 3D figure unit on TPT. You can find it by clicking here or on the image below: 2. HOW MANY CUBES CAN YOU STACK? Here is a simple building/number sense centre that I set out before the break! How many cubes can you stack? Students were encouraged to record how many they were able to stack before their tower toppled over. 4. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS NUMBER ORDER One area of need we identified in our students during our BCI was ordering numbers to 10, so I quickly whipped up this Christmas lights number order centre. I tied a piece of string on to 2 chairs and and set the Christmas light numbers out with clothes pins. Students were encouraged to clip the lights in order. I know it's too late now, but you can grab these to use for next year for free! Click here or on the image below to download the freebie: 5. PREGNANCY ANNOUNCEMENT We spilled the beans on our pregnancy this week and I can't thank you guys enough for the well wishes we have received. It started off a little rough at the beginning with daily morning sickness and extreme fatigue (one of the reasons why I haven't been posting as much on social media recently) but since entering the second trimester I've felt soooo much better. I'm still going to take it easy and post/share when I can. Some people asked me where the onesie and shoes are from so here are the links: Onesie: Chapters Shoes: Old Navy The calendar is the same calendar that I am sharing in #6 but shrunk down 50% and cut out to be proportionate with the photo :) 6. 2018 CALENDARS, TO-DO LISTS, DAILY PLANNERS I updated my home calendar for 2018 (top) and thought I would share it here, just in case you guys could use it too! I just print these on card stock, pop it on the fridge with a magnet and write on it directly. I know lots of people do digital calendars now a days but I still like the paper :) I also made some to-do lists and daily planners to plan out my winter break and get some things accomplished. I need a plan to get things done and use my time efficiently so I always make these up for every break. I modified them for both TPT-ers and non TPT-ers so that hopefully it will be useful to most of you who may want to use it! You can download all of the planning printables by clicking here or on the image below: That's it for today! Thank you so much for following along with this little blog of mine in 2017. 2018 promises to be another busy year, but I'm hoping to continue to share my classroom with you as best as I can! - Yukari SaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSave

This is a great project for kids who are interested in nature and bugs. This is an easy project for kids of any age and you get to watch ants build an underground city...so it is pretty cool. This ant farm has no openings, so you don't have to worry about the ants escaping. You can open the jar outside to feed the ants, and then close it back up and bring it inside to observe.

We are about finished with our shape study (introduction/review). Most of my kiddos come in knowing their colors and shapes, but it’s fun to do a bit of a review, just to be certain. One of my awesome Kindergarten colleagues uses the Roger Hargreaves books to review shapes. She even has the most AMAZING puppets that another colleague made for her. I wish I had a picture, but you have to trust me that they are adorable. They are on my summer to-do list! So each week, we read one of the Roger Hargreaves books. (These were some of my favorites as a child, and when my oldest was little, I started scooping them up again!) After we read the book (which have great character ed lessons), I drew the character and brainstormed other things that have the same shape. Here are some of our charts: I’m missing a few of my charts, but I’ll add them as soon as I snap pictures! I LOVE seeing the kiddos refer to these anchor charts and I LOVE seeing them trying to draw the characters! They are so stinkin’ cute!!
