Each year there is a few different days that I truly look forward to. Days like Spooky School, Grinch Day, & Second Day of Second Grade. I truly love this day. When I first started teaching my mentor teacher told me about different things she does for the 2nd day of 2nd grade. I took her activities and many ideas floating around in my head and just rolled with it! Every subject on the 2nd day revolves around the #2. I really have found this builds excitement among the second graders for this year of second grade. It pumps them up to be a second grader. It's always tough coming back from summer and so it's nice to have a day of some unique activities. This packet that I created has so many different activities that I never can do them all in one day. I like to pick and choose some of my favorite activities and just go with those. I mix them up each year too, so I don't get too sick of things. Every year I seem to think of 1 or 2 new ideas that I end up adding to this packet so if you do purchase it, every year be checking for a redownload. It's funny... the best ideas I get come to me at such random times.... washing my hair in the shower, driving to school, going on walks with Grace. It seems like everytime I get a great idea I never have a pen to write it down! Many ideas of mine have probably gone forgotten because of this. Let's get those 2nd graders excited to be in 2nd grade!!!

Howdy! Thanks for stopping by! One of my favorite Morning Warm Up activities is my "Think Outside the Box Thursday!" activity. I developed this unit to help my kiddos stretch the creative side of their brains. The goal is for them to make the shape into something no one else will think of. This week's shape brought out some fabulous ideas! Way to go kids! for this printable, click here :) for your own copy of my 39 page Think Outside the Box Thursday pack, click here Stay tuned for another peek into the creative minds of first graders!! Joyfully! Nancy
Sorry this is so late folks! The girl who never does anything, did three significant things today! So this is more of Think About it Friday... but I will be better next week, I promise. :) Our question today is how to use just one sentence to describe yourself... hmm. Lemme think. "An old soul in a slightly random brain trying to make sense of this strange story called life." How would you describe yourself? For that fact, if you know me, how would you describe me in one sentence? I would love to know! **I have changed the way comments work, by the way, so you don't have to type the random code before submitting. In an effort to make it easier for you to comment, it also opens me up to spam, so I now moderate and approve all comments. So, if you write a comment, never fear! It will be published, after I see it to make sure you're not a spambot of malarkey.**
Hey hey! Happy Throwback Thursday to you. I'm linking up with Cara over at First Grade Parade today. This was one of my most favorite writing activities this year. We were focusing on how to show not tell in our writing. I had found this super idea at Miss Radka's Rhapsody. The kids chose a strong emotion, and used this planner to brainstorm. **Originally posted October 20, 2012 I wrote here about the awesome lesson I found on Miss Radka's Rhapsody blog and how well it went in my classroom. Here are a few pictures of the final projects. We actually finished these up about two weeks ago. Details details. This is the lesson that keeps on giving. We were working on plans this week. I asked the kids not to just plan the feeling they were having, but how they were going to show it. This lesson has been PERFECTO to refer back to. I know it's going to be an anchor lesson we come back to all year long. Annnnd, here's a little tip for your kiddos that are really struggling with showing feeling. I was working with one of my little guys who was feeling terrified at a point in his story. I asked him how he was going to show it, we referred back to this lesson, and he was still struggling. He told me he wasn't feeling anything, he was just terrified. So, out of nowhere I yelled "BAM!!!!!!!" at the top of my lungs. He jumped a mile. We discussed how his body reacted physically and how he looked when I did that. We also had a good laugh before y'all think I tortured the poor kid. ****** Hope you enjoyed this little trip down memory lane. Going over this lesson again makes me ready to jump into teaching writing again!
Here are two really simple activities for kids to explore this Maundy Thursday. If you have flour or a bread mix in your cupboard then it's a great day to bake some bread together & share the story of the Last Supper. However, due to the current situation, I'm aware that we might not all have a host of ingredients in our kitchen cupboards, so I've created these simple activities as an alternative. You can download them both here Hand Washing Printable The Last Supper Printable If you're looking for more activities for children to explore during Holy Week you'll find them here
These are the top ten 2nd grade classroom transformations for students. They are easy to implement, rigorous, and fun for second graders!
I can't believe it is already Thursday!! My school district is on Spring Break this week, so of course the week is flying by!! You know what Thursday means!! It is Take It and Make It Thursday! I am linking up with my good friend Cynthia over at 2nd Grade Pad for her Take It and Make It Thursday! I have something to share with you today that is not really a craft, but it is an activity for your students to do before and after they take the BIG TEST! It is a drawing and writing activity! First talk with your students about how they might feel before taking the test. They might feel nervous, scared, anxious, worried, afraid, etc. Just remind them to do their best on the test. Then have students complete the Before the Test writing and drawing activity. After the test, they will complete the After The Test Writing and Drawing activity. First, talk with them about how they feel now that the test is over. Did they do their best? This is a fun activity! I always enjoy looking at the drawings to show how they feel before and after! Just click on the picture below and you will get this freebie! I hope you and your students enjoy these writing activities as much as my students do!! Don't forget to go to 2nd Grade Pad and share your ideas!!
