New York Times Building (1888–89, expanded 1903–05) 1888 Architect: George B. Post 1903 Architect: Robert Maynicke for Maynicke & Franke 41 Park Row Lower Manhattan, New York The Times built the first wholly dedicated newspaper headquarters building on this site in 1857–58. The 1889 building was constructed around the core of the original so that the printing presses could run uninterrupted. The Times headquarters is one of the last remaining newspaper buildings on Newspaper Row. In 1830 the New York Mirror located its headquarters on Nassau Street. By 1836, fourteen newspapers and various printing concerns formed the core of what would become known as Newspaper Row by the 1860s. By the 1880s, it was home to the Herald, Tribune, Staats-Zeitung, World, Times, Post and Telegraph. The Herald departed for Herald Square in 1894 and the Times to Times Square in 1904. But other papers remained in the area through the 1920s. With the departure of the Times, the building's owners decided to remove the mansard roof and expand the building four stories. Pace University acquired the building in 1951. George B. Post (1837–1913) studied under richard Morris Hunt before forming a professiona partnership in 1860. His New York designs include the Williamsburgh Savings Bank, Brooklyn (1875), the Brookyn Historical Society (1880), New York Times Building, Park Row (1889), the New York Stock Exchange (1903) and the CCNY campus (1907). © Matthew X.
