Patti Smith Group Wave (Vinyl, Arista, 1979) *** Patti Smith Dream Of Life (Vinyl, Arista, 1988) *** Genre: Alternative rock Places I remember: Marbecks Records (the record cover has the sticker to prove it!) Fab, and all the other pimply hyperboles: Frederick Gear costume: Looking For You (I Was); Dream Of Life; Dancing Barefoot; Citizen Ship. Active compensatory factors: These two albums were much appreciated by me at the time, but, in hindsight, they are somewhat spotty mid period albums. Both tried out more mainstream rock sounds and so I've grouped them together here. Wave is the last album by the Patti Smith Group and when she returned to music nine years later it was without the brilliant Lenny Kaye on guitar (he was replaced on Dream Of Life by her husband - Fred Sonic Smith). Fred was probably a better guitarist technically, but Lenny is the perfect foil for Patti and I missed his presence. Stylistically Dream of Life is more consistently successful than Wave, but Wave has more peaks (no apologies for the pun), and more connections to the firey PSG of old. Still, it's Patti and she is yet to put out a bad record y'all! Where do they all belong? When Patti's next album, Gone Again, came after Dreams, it was another 8 years later and Lenny was back. What's 16 years between friends?
Elliott Smith died young, but he didn’t leave a beautiful corpse. As one of the most talented songwriters of his generation, he’d made a career of singing about sadness and suicide. He was th…
Fantastic large and colorful red-orange amberina glass centerpiece vase in the 1905 Nortec pattern featuring whirling hobstars, reverse herringbone, and saw-tooth rim and foot. This is a stunning example of McKee's trademarked "Pres-Cut" molded glassware, hand polished to imitate fine cut glass at the turn of the 20th century. In 1904 McKee received the patent for its new technique and began production of what was to become a line of 18 patterns, each carrying the suffix 'tec.' Many were reproductions of existing patterns, including Nortec. Later reproduction of reproductions were made when molds changed hands as companies were bought and sold. This particular vase is not marked, however, I believe it is by L.E. Smith circa 1950s, 60s or 70s. The amberina red color is scarce and may be the result of EPA orders to cease production pending the renovation of furnaces to address environmental concerns. Amberina is the effect of reheating part of the glass before it cools to create the color shading from red to orange and amber. As a result of this process, each piece will have unique coloration. The Nortec pattern is also known as Ohio Star, Centipede (refers to reverse herringbone design), and Comet in the Star. Terrific mid-century collectible, or centerpiece vase! • SIZE 9" x 4.5" opening • CONDITION: Very Good - no damages; some in-manufacture flaws such as straw marks (from cooling process) and trapped bubbles • FREE SHIPPING, Fast & Safe VASES http://etsy.me/2d9NUn5 L.E. One of the two brands that conquered Everest, Smiths is not very well known. Let's take a deep dive into who this small time British watchmaker was.
The US show circuit is booming. The One Show, the Outlier's Guild show, Mama Tried and the Handbuilt show all happen within a couple of months of each other. And each one is curated with a stacked roster of jaw-dropping machines. It’s great news for custom moto fans, but for builders, it makes it harder to stand out in the crowd. But walking around Mama Tried earlier this year, it was impossible to take my eyes off this track-inspired Honda CB400F. It's the work of Shawn Smith, and the first build out of his part-time shop, Innovative Motosports in Ankeny,
