Η εξημέρωση του σκύλου στην ελληνική περιοχή χρονολογείται πριν από την προ-κεραμική νεολιθική εποχή, η οποία στην Ελλάδα ξεκινάει την 7η χιλιετία ΠΚΕ. Ενδείξεις από τους πρώτους ύστερους παλαιολιθικούς και πρώτους νεολιθικούς οικισμούς [Ασκηταριό, Διμήνι, Μακρύγιαλος Πιερίας, Προμαχών, Σέσκλο, Σιταγροί], Topolnica (Βουλγαρία) και άλλες τοποθεσίες στη Σερβία, στηρίζουν την υπόθεση ότι υπήρξε τοπικό γεγονός εξημέρωσης του σκύλου στην περιοχή μεταξύ 9ης και 7ης χιλιετίας Π.Κ.Ε.
