Oops! Don't mind the wrinkles, I took this photo after an afternoon of sitting in the truck running errands! Oh wow, look! A sewing project that isn't a knitting project bag! Crazy, I know! I'm sure a lot of you are pretty relieved to not have to see another bag. This dress was my last FO of 2010, and was sewn at the beginning of December but couldn't blog about it 'til now cause I just couldn't get any photos taken of it. I knew that I wasn't going to get any knitting projects completed before the year was over but had thought why not end the year with a bang by sewing an actual garment? This here is a Tova dress, sewn from a Wiksten limited edition hand-drawn sewing pattern. I've been in love with this dress since 2008, when I first laid eyes on the dress when Jenny first wore it on her blog. Then this version appeared a few months later and was to be on sale in her shop that spring. She was a one-woman show at the time and couldn't keep her shop stocked because her pieces would always sell out within a matter of hours, sometimes minutes! Even enlisting the help of an intern hasn't allowed her online shop to stay stocked with even one item. Not that it would matter anyways cause I wouldn't have been able to afford one of her lovely creations, now that my disposable income is no more and has become the Munchkin's diaper fund. The dress was a very easy sew and came with thorough step-by-step instructions accompanied by photos for each step. Definitely a great pattern for a beginner who is ready for something a little more challenging. Brett was perplexed as to why I would buy such a pricey pattern for such a simple design, especially when I could have drafted the pattern myself. Well, true...I could have drafted the pattern but I would have felt extremely guilty for copying a self-published, independent designer's work. I love this dress to bits and would like to give the credit where credit is due while supporting an indie designer. I had to explain to Brett that the reason why the pattern was costly was because it was hand-drawn, then taken to a copy centre before each copy was folded by hand by the designer herself, then packaged and labeled...all in such a short amount of time and the whole process completed by a mere 2 peeps. All in all it had a lot to do with ethics and morals...and maybe, as a sewist and crafter myself, understanding just how much time and effort goes into producing such an item. Anyhoo, back to the dress. I wasn't quite sure what type of fabric I wanted to use, and whether o not if I wanted a print or a solid fabric. So to help me decide I opted to shop within my fabric stash. I have had this blue fabric for a few years now, the post-it note containing the fabric's info was long gone. All I knew about it was that I had purchased it at Fabricana and that it was a linen blend of sorts. After a quick burn test I confirmed that the fabric was indeed linen, mixed with a tiny bit of viscose or rayon. I'm betting that it is a linen/bamboo blend, solely because I remember being full of glee as I laid eyes on the variety of sustainable fabrics that Fabricana was carrying at the time. It took me 3 days to sew up the dress cause I only had the Munchkin's nap time to work on it. So far the dress is great as a layering piece for the colder weather and will be fabulous and airy in warmer weather. When I first tried on the dress Brett immediately called it my "19 kids and counting Amish dress". He really thought it was too roomy and a bit too conservative compared to the rest of the dresses in my wardrobe. I, on the other hand, am happy with how the dressed turned out and plan on making another as well as a shirt version sometime soon. The only things I would change the next time 'round would be to shorten the sleeves a tad and maybe sew the extra-small size for the shirt in hopes that it will cut down the ease in the bust area. Now if only I can find the perfect fabrics...

FLEECE DRESS – KNOW ME 2007 In all the years I’ve been sewing, I have never sewn a fleece dress. Why? Because the words “fleece” and “dress” didn’t seem to belong in the same sentence for me. Fleece was reserved for sweatshirts, sweatpants and hoodies, in my opinion. That all changed when I ran across […]

A Little Gray--Persimmon in the Sun For this challenge, I based my whole look on the color persimmon. It's not red, not orange, not pink, just persimmon! I made a fun little sunsuit in a vintage-inspired print that features ornate lacy flowers on an ivory background. Part of the challenge for me was finding this one perfect fabric to use in the sunsuit and hat while not having it look like "too much." But if you do happen to want more of it, the hat is reversible! The versatile grandpa-style cardigan is made of the softest bamboo jersey knit. It features sweet gathered sleeves, roomy pockets, large vintage buttons, and a stylish lace inset in the back yoke. I love how the oversized sweater looks so cool and casual over the short bloomers. Check out more details and pictures of this fun early summer ensemble at A Little Gray. CP--Just Peachy Picking a color was so hard for me! Drew and I love colors. Pretty much all of them. I searched and searched for the "right" color in the right material and just couldn't get in my zone for this challenge. It was love at first sight and touch though when I found this perfect peach. The world made sense again. Peach is not pink. Peach is fresh and fun. Peach is perfect for spring and summer. Peach is youthful. Peach is a little bit retro. Peach is a fashionable color right now but not so trendy and overdone. Peach, peach, peach! I use solid colors a lot in my designs. I love me a good pattern, but with solids you can really see the details and structure of the item. In this dress the details are the tuxedo ruffles in front, ruffles along the skirt hem, the perfect collar, and my favorite, the half flutter sleeves. I also played with the circle skirt pattern again and came up with a "mullet skirt" style. You know, short in the front and longer in the back! Because of this shape I knew the inside of the skirt piece would be very visible and I wanted it to be just as beautiful, so I used french seams (the seam is fully enclosed). It made such a strong and pretty finish that I used french seams for the entire dress. The perfect accessory for this dress is the braided leather belt. It was so easy to make and I plan on making one for me too. I used leather scraps from an upholstery store near my house and a buckle from an old belt I never wear (last week's recycle challenge has stuck with me!). And just to send this outfit over the top I made a little retro pillbox hat with silver eyelets for inserting the bobby pins. I really played off the vintage feel of the dress in the photo shoot, but take away the pillbox hat and the historic Chevy and this dress is also modern too. Check out my blog for more pictures and details! Kiki and Company--Here Comes the Sun Oh, how I love color! Yellow has always been such a happy color to me, so it was a perfect choice for the upcoming sunny summer. One of my favorite trends lately are the pairing of stripes and floral. Knowing that I needed to keep the outfit in one color, I picked up two different shades of yellow and made my own striped fabric and then went to town on this sweet little outfit. I love a good bold pattern with a simple design. This simple dress started out as a tight t-shirt design and ended up a cute and tailored A-line dress. I added large pockets (big enough for ALL of my daughters latest craze...squinkies), and added a really sweet little pleating detail down the side. I finished the dress off with yellow pleating around the bottom of the dress, the neckline and even used it to make little flutter sleeves. I know I needed some strong statement pieces to offset the big stripes and I LOVE how they turned out! After making the brooch and the hair accessory, I used the same yellow pleating to make a cuff for my daughter to wear and then finished the floral part off on the shoes with some large flowers that I made to clip on, but are also interchangeable! This outfit will be perfect for the quickly approaching summer, but even as the fall approaches, this dress paired with a little cardigan, skinny jeans and knee high boots will keep her warm and still bright. Come on by Kiki and Company to see all the little details and grab your free paper doll outfit! Melly Sews--Wildflower White When I got the list of themes for this season and saw Color for Week 4, I knew instantly what color I wanted to work with and where I wanted to shoot photos. In our part of Texas, it is a spring tradition to go shoot portraits in the wildflowers, specifically the bluebonnets, and after a terrible drought last year, we got enough rain at the right time to have gorgeous fields of bluebonnets this year. Wildflower White is the perfect look to wear for timeless photos. The dress is layers of cotton gauze, one of my favorite summer fabrics because it's light and easy to wash and wear. I started with a simple strappy sundress, fully lined with more gauze, then added the draped layers at the sides and topped it off with every trim in the store (at least according to my Hubby). It has crochet lace straps and trim, a stretch-shirred off the shoulder lace flounce, and a coordinated headband with scraps of lace and cotton gauze rosettes. For my son's outfit, I used white linen, and drafted a shirt in a guayabera style, with embroidery down the fronts and on the back, traditional pintucked pleats matched at the shoulder seams and patch pockets. The shorts feature cargo pockets, cuffs, a mock fly and button tabs. They are fully lined so we don't see undies peeking through the white linen. Check out more pictures on my blog, Melly Sews! Sew Together--Pinky Promise When our two littlest girls discovered that the challenge this week was colour and that they were going to be our models, their campaign for pink began. Although we were initially reluctant (we have SO much pink in our lives!) the girls were persuasive and we were inspired to make an outfit that we would all love. In order to remedy the sickly sweet reputation that pink has, we decided use a ‘rainbow’ of pink shades to create the fabric for our outfits. It took three fabric stores to find a range of pinks that satisfied our girls! There are 14 different pink solids used in this dress – some plain and others shot cotton. These fabrics were cut into two inch strips and squares. We feel like we spent a lot of the week sewing the most wonderful pink quilt and then cutting it up to make these dresses - anything to make our daughters happy! While the girls’ outfits look like pinafores and shirts, they are actually dresses. The lined bodices and skirts are pieced while the puffed sleeves and peter pan collars are made in white cotton. The box pleat in the centre front of the dress adds an extra pop of colour, but also makes the dresses super comfortable for running and playing. The covered button closure at the back makes them easy to get on and off…important when you’re four and it’s hot! The striped fabric creates lots of interesting lines - running vertically in some places and horizontally elsewhere. They create fun patterns where the side seams join, where the box pleats meet and along the hemline. Little girls like little details. The elastic headbands and covered button bracelets added extra colour to the outfit and may or may not have been a bribe to ‘inspire’ the girls during the photo shoot. We had lots of fun creating this outfit and the girls had lots of fun wearing it. Pop over to Sew Together to see some more photos and finds out all about pink! We’d love to see you… Related Posts
Sometimes I change the order of my to-sew queue** purely because of the color of the thread on my serger. But that's not necessarily a bad thing... I've been meaning to sew up another Appleton dress. I love my tester version so much and it has seen a lot of action for work events and meetings. I'm sure my colleagues are sick of seeing me in it. "Get a new dress!," I think I heard someone comment, sotto voce, last time I wore it to the office. I've got approximately eleventy million versions of the Appleton planned, but the black serger thread in my machine, left over from some Mother's Day gifts I was making, gave me the excuse to sew up this particular one! Another day, another Nicole Miller rayon jersey... love this stuff! This kaleidoscope-esque/rainbow Rorschach test print is completely within my color comfort zone: jewel-toned blues and greens, bright and crazy. This fabric is really a delight to sew with, too: not too slippery, doesn't curl, presses well. I'm super pumped to have cut out this dress quite creatively, allowing for lots of extra fabric, enough for a t-shirt or blouse of some sort. Hurrah! I didn't really bother with pattern matching. If you look closely, there is a little bit of a repeat across the two front panels. But you'd have to be looking really close to notice, I think. Like uncomfortably, creepily close. Stop that, you! I centered one of the lines of Rorschach down the center back, which I worried might look weird, but I quite like the final result: Same as my tester version, I went with a size 14 C/D on the top, graded to a 16 at the hip. This time, though, I cut the size 16 sleeves to give myself a little bit of extra fabric for my biceps. No problems easing them in and I am happy to have some more wiggle room there. I also added an inch in length to the skirt, for more knee coverage when sitting. The only tricky part, like my test version, was attaching the waist ties to the neckband. Somehow the instructions still didn't click for me the second time. But this video posted during the Appleton sewalong was incredibly helpful! To finish the waist tie hole more cleanly than my last, I used a tip from Debbie at Stitches and Seams. I used some sticky stuff to hold the little flaps down while I topstitched them. Not Steam-a-seam as she mentioned, but some double-sided hem tape stuff (I can't remember the brand name). Muuuuuuch neater! I love, love this Appleton... serious hearts-for-eyes love. The fabric is ah-mah-zing and the minor changes made from the tester version to the final pattern make a huge difference in fit! New go-to dress. Boom. ** "to-sew queue" = chaotic, swirling mass of half-baked ideas, impulsive purchases and improbable dream projects.

Estelle hits at the on-trend midaxi length, between a midi and a maxi. She looks great with heels, boots or trainers, with or without tights, so you can wear her all year round! Choose between short, 3/4 length or long sleeves and make Estelle with a straight or a slightly wider skirt with side splits. We’ve included two different split notches, so you can make them higher or lower, depending on your preference. This is a dress that can look casual, sophisticated or sassy, depending on the fabric you use. Make your Estelle in a viscose or bamboo jersey for a slinky version that hugs the body, or pick a light cotton jersey for an everyday dress that can be elevated with just a change of footwear. Try her in a sparkly jersey or a stretch velvet to make a stunning party dress for the festive season or a winter wedding! Have a look at our Estelle Dress Pinterest Board for inspiration and see what everyone’s making on Instagram with the hashtag #soiestelledress.
The Brassia Dress free sewing pattern is a breeze and within a couple hours you'll have a lovely new garment for your transitional wardrobe! For this version, I chose one of Mood's adorable discount jersey prints and lined it with a ponte for some extra structure, but you can easily skip the lining and opt for a heavier knit such as velour or bamboo jersey!
A little tutorial on how I made this variation to the bamboo-bodice by using origami petals.
