A long-lasting healthy relationship requires daily meaningful communication about topics like fears, goals, worries, happiness, and the quality of your relationship. Starting the conversation is as easy as asking simple questions.
Billy Collins, American poet whose uncommonly accessible verse made him one of the most popular poets in the United States. His work was characterized by plain language, gentle humor, and an alert appreciation for the mundane. From 2001 to 2003 he served as poet laureate consultant in poetry.

The Odyssey is a popular text in high school English. Check out these 9 poems to pair with The Odyssey. Help students practice synthesis with these texts!
Too many classroom icebreakers require students to take big social risks with people they barely know. Or they don't really help students get to know each other. Or they are just plain cheesy.
I'm feeling a little bit behind. So many of you are going back to school and I still have about 3 weeks of summer left! I feel like I'm not able to share things from my room because, well... I haven't been in there yet! I did want to share a few things with you. FIRST-Call me maybe CRAZY-but while on my vacation, I created and finished a big little unit for Election (or President's Day). There are over 20 activities that I'll be using during the week of election. Last election, my team organized a whole school Presidential Voting---so there are also ballots included in the packet with Obama, Romney and Paul listed as well as a blank line for "write ins." Click on the picture to take you to the listing to read more about what is in it. I'm excited about it! (And, I promise that I'll start the October Math and Literacy stations that I've been asked about ASAP!!!!) =) Next, I want to share an activity that isn't new in any way, but maybe new to you! On the first day of school, I'm going to give my firsties a little quiz. This quiz will be a little different. I have created (it's important to write down everything, including answers---even though it's obvious!) 25 True/False statements about myself. Here's the part that makes it even more fun and engaging. First, you will line up your students across the back of the room---or take them outside. This will be played kinda like "Mother May I" or "Red Light, Green Light." I will stand where ever I want the kids to finish. I will read a statement about myself. If they think it is TRUE, they will take a STEP FORWARD. If they think it is FALSE, they will STAY PUT. If they answer INCORRECTLY, they GO BACK TO START! The first one(s) to make it to me is the winner! Click on the picture to read statements I put on. I have more trues than falses for this one so that I'm sure to get SOMEONE to me. I am going to send home the paper to parents after we complete it in class for parents to give it a try. (They won't need to send it back.) I will send home answers to them the following day. I'm hoping that this not only helps create a nice classroom culture from day one, but also a great family relationship. Here's what I did for you! Click on the next picture to go to google docs. There you can download an editable version of above (with the directions in place---and one set of directions for SHE and one set for HE-both are in the same doc-and you'll need powerpoint to edit) If you like the font I have, I used Hello Literacy's font: HelloAli ALSO-I plan on giving my winner (or winners) a little certificate. I am thinking that I'll be making one for everyone because I'm not quite sure I'll get an answer from my little firsties ;) Click on the next picture to grab yourself a copy! (I will also put the direction page there too, for those of you who do not have powerpoint. You could do the old fashion cut and paste to get your statements on there) LAST-If you haven't heard by now, Teachers Pay Teachers is having a HUGE sale this weekend! I will be having my store 20% off. Use the code BTS12 to get an additional 10% off! I can't wait to clear out my wishlist and get some great new things for this school year! Here are some of the newer things that I have recently placed on TPT: Word Jails are now editable! First day/week of school ideas/activities I have K-5 checklists available in my store! Lit stations/centers perfect for September! Math Stations/Centers perfect for September! A fun word work station activity that can be used throughout the year! OH! And if you made it this far-----I HAVE A GIVEAWAY GOING ON RIGHT NOW FOR YOU TO WIN A PIECE OF JEWELRY OF YOUR CHOICE (UP TO $100) FROM LIA SOPHIA!!!!!!!------>GIVEAWAY! This poem is about a man who is at the end of his life. The narrator illustrates his old age in the first stanza: “When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang/Upon those boughs which shake against the cold” (lines 2-3).

A note: All the highlighted words in my blog are clickable links. I recently came across a blog from Tami Taylor about keeping a Five Year Journal. She prints a list of questions every month for you to work on, just one a day. Tami does this on index cards....but as a Filofax user...this is another great excuse for a new Filofax. So my Filofax this time is, the beautiful A5 Imperial Purple Finchley. At £125 this one doesn't come cheap.....unless you find a used one on e-bay OR contact The Filofax Shop in Neal Street, London and get a bargain (like I did) for £40. The Finchley is a beautiful Filofax, it feels heavenly and the colour is rich, only downside is the 25mm rings. I would love this to have had 30mm ones. But look at how flat it lies! So inside, I have kept it clutter free. The red card insert is from the journal cover I used, to make the Filofax paper I did here. It is only there so I can rest on it whilst writing. As you can see, I am using the 25mm rings to the maximum. Under the flyleaf, is a yearly calendar I designed. Most yearly calendars have the months down the left hand side, I wanted days of the week in that place instead. I haven't started the journal yet, but once I do, I will mark off each day with a highlighter so I know what days I've completed. I went onto Tami's Blog and printed off the questions. So far, there's only January to August, but she adds the following month's questions around the middle of the previous month, so September is due any day! I decided to print the questions out on patterned paper, but to be honest, I'm not sure I like this format. I was going to add tabs to them with the months written on and use them as dividers but decided against it. Next I had to make the pages, in hindsight, it would of being so much easier printing these pages on plain paper and punching the holes to fit the Filofax. Drawing the separation lines and writing in the years, took me the best part of two days and four A5 White Ruled Notepads On the very top line, I write the daily question. We haven't been given the October questions yet so I wrote one with a Frixion pen (so I can erase it later), to show you what it would look like. I used this date for obvious reasons. lol So you can see how this journal is going to work, I can imagine each answer for the same question will be different every year. I've added divider tabs using Avery stickers, using the same format I did in my Homemade Label Blog. So now I am really looking forward to using it! Even though we are 8 months into this year, I am still going to go back and try and answer the questions from the previous months, using notes from my daily dairy/journal.

Synopsis Expand/Collapse Synopsis Soon to be a major motion picture starring Academy Award winner Christopher Plummer, Lily James, and Jai Courtney. The Exception (originally published as The Kaiser’s Last Kiss), is a “crisp, adroit, and subtle tale of great personal power” (The New York Times), which follows the exiled Kaiser Wilhelm, the young Nazi officer assigned to guard him, and the Jewish maid who unwittingly comes between them. It is 1940 and the exiled monarch Kaiser Wilhelm is living in his Dutch chateau, Huis Doorn. The old German king spends his days chopping logs and musing on what might have been. When the Nazis invade Holland, the Kaiser’s staff is replaced by SS guards, led by young and recently commissioned SS officer Martin Krebbs, and an unlikely relationship develops between the king and his keeper. While they agree on the rightfulness of German expansion and on holding the nation’s Jewish population accountable for all ills, they disagree on the solutions. But when Krebbs becomes attracted to Akki, a Jewish maid in the house, he begins to question his belief in Nazism. As the threads of history conspire with the recklessness of the heart, The Kaiser, Untersturmfuhrer Krebbs, and the mysterious Akki find themselves increasingly conflicted and gravely at risk…
One of the most confounding date-related events ever in history, and one that regularly impacts genealogical researchers, is the calendar change of 1752. While we can all be incredibly glad that our ancestors had the foresight to correct calculation errors that would allow for more accurate calendars for generations to come - the change can certainly cause some confusion.
