This is the first Favorite Things Friday in our new house! This week has been really fun making our house our home. You can see our first room reveal in our home {here}. It's been a great week & we truly feel like a weight has been lifted off of us. I have read a book this week, sat on our porch for hours, taken walks, met some neighbors, taken naps, & more things I haven't done in a long time because I was stressed and so busy at the old house. When I was in 6th grade, I was invited to a birthday party at a really cool house. I had never seen a house with an outside on the inside. I was fascinated. Yesterday, my daughter and I were surfing the net looking at real estate when I noticed my classmate Olivia's house was up for sale so I decided to try to create a court yard house that had all my essential elements. With 2831 square feet, this is one of my bigger houses. I chose to make the bedrooms fairly large so that intergenerational living would be fairly easy, but the bedroom wing of the house could easily be sectioned off to accommodate another bedroom or two. The master bedroom has direct access to the inner courtyard as do the family and living areas. The large laundry room opens into the master bath, featuring a garden tub and a large walk in shower. The family room can be opened to the kitchen with large double doors, or hidden from view if entertaining guests in the formal living and dining area. Of course there is a large pantry and plenty of closet space. The court yard itself has endless possibilities ... a hot tub, small pool or pond, enclosed with a skylight roof, or no roof at all ... Hope you like it! God Bless You All! ~Grama Sue

I hate when additions look like an afterthought. When you can clearly tell the addition from the old house. I am determined to make this flow into the house, so hopefully you can’t tell:) The exterior of the house will look something like this… The whole left side is the new part. And my inspiration … THE EXTERIOR OF THE ADDITION Read More »

A glimpse inside my pottery home studio Since a couple of months I am working in my new pottery home studio. My girlfriend and me moved from Amsterdam to Geldrop, Brabant. The main reason for this move was that I missed my family a lot and wanted to be closer to them. Another reason was that I was working in a really small studio in Amsterdam. It was a little shed in our back yard, 2 by 3 meters, too small to grow my business in. I had reached a plateau and knew that I needed a bigger space to work and grow in. Not long after we had discussed about moving to another house, we had the opportunity to see a house close to my family. When we stepped in, it was an instant match and we saw ourself living there. So, after just one viewing, we decided that this was gonna be our new home. And the absolute best thing about this house is that it has a big attic where I could build my new studio. The attic is around 25 square meters and has beautiful lighting and a high ceiling. The perfect conditions for a pottery home studio. This new studio gave me so much good vibes and I was so excited to make a plan for where to put all of my stuff like my wheel, working tables and cabinets. The flooring was taking out of the whole house by the old owners, so that gave me the opportunity to put something really good and durable in it. I wanted a floor that was water resistent and easy to take care off. After some research on the internet I had found a company (verfbestelsite.nl) that makes water resistent floor coatings. They make these coatings in every colour that you can imagine, I choose a light grey one. And I absolutely love this water resistent floor coating. I can mop the floor everyday and all of the little clay-water drops gets off of it really easy. It was very clear to me where to put everything in the new space. I knew that I wanted to put my wheel in the spot where it is now. It’s such a bright spot and I love working there. The big tables that you see on the other side of the studio are basically Ikea frames with two big hardwood sheets of wood. I bought them at our local hardware store and they cut them for me in the right dimensions. I work directly on this wood, because it is hardwood it can get wet and won’t warp. I have used this for over two years now and it’s still in the same condition as when I first used it. Close to my wheel I have a shelving system that is soooo good! I have bought it at Hornbach and the best thing about it it that I can rearrange the whole unit. I can take out the little carriers and rearrange them if I need more space between the shelves. The studio is divided in two sections. The first floor is the little Studio Bloei Winkel (store). All of the finished products are displayed here and I have a small packing station where I can pack all of the orders. Close to the window I have an area where I can take pictures, so I left that whole area clear. I love all of the shelves and that the room is so bright and airy. I am so happy with how the new studio turned out and I am so thankful that I can work here every day. -X Robin

Happy New Year!! Can you believe we’ve made it to 2022?! It has been a wild few years and we’ve had to figure out a new way of life after the arrival of COVID. Thank goodness for the blank slate of a new year. I don’t know about you but I’m ready for a better year, so I’ve come up with
Easy peasy right? Just 3! We can do it! Are you with me?!
Putting a smile on your face releases dopamine, endorphins and serotonin, relaxing your body and raising your mood. Did you know a smile can even lower your heart rate and blood pressure?
It’s a simple concept but what a difference you can feel if you turn that frown upside down more often!
Sure it’s easy to say, but we all know it can be hard to do, especially with the stress, anxiety and loneliness we may have become accustomed to in the past few years. So how can we take advantage of the mood boosting super power of a smile more often?
Make a list of 5 things that always make you smile….
Then, commit to doing one of those things on a regular schedule. If it’s once a week, great! If you can commit to that smile, once a day, awesome! If you can make it multiple times a day, even better! But make it a priority to do something specific that makes you smile.
and don’t forget it! Put a post-it on the bathroom mirror to remind yourself!
More smiles in 2022 automatically means you will feel more calm and more relaxed with a lighter, brighter mood, and therefore automatically it’s a better year! That’s right, AUTOMATICALLY – it’s science!
Do you make new year’s resolutions? Is it a giant list of all the ways you are going to eat healthier, work out more, drink less, give to charity, volunteer, etc etc.? And is it also a giant list that will be thrown out the window in about 3 weeks when you’ve “failed” to keep up? That’s the part I hate about new year’s resolutions. Mine are never realistic, always abundant, and the minute I start to slip just a little, the entire house of cards comes crashing down and I end up trudging along until I can try again next year.
If it’s not working for you, you don’t need to carry it around. Instead of trying to do ALL of the things that you think will make you a better version of you in 2022,
Don’t worry about accomplishing EVERYTHING, accomplish ONE thing.
Don’t make a list of everything you want to do in 2022, pick one thing, and make that your one, New Year’s Resolution Hit Single!
...and be specific.
No overarching theme resolutions like “I’m going to get in shape”, or “I’m going to keep my house clean”, or “I’m going to spend more time with my family.” Instead try “I will go for a 15 minute walk three times a week” or “I will clean off the kitchen table once a week” or “I will pick a time each week to watch a movie with my family.”
Pick something specific, achievable and realistic and then stick with it. Next year, when you look back at your new year’s resolutions for 2022 you can say “Hey, I did that!” and that feels so good.
One thing I’ve learned from the past few years is that life as you know it can change in an instant, but meaningful moments with the ones who matter most to us can be a light in any darkness.
One of my favorite ways to make memories is with traditions. A tradition gives you a focal point. It’s something you can all reminisce about but also something you can all look forward to. It’s a special point in time, with special, consistent components you can rely on, shared with the ones you love.
Here are some ideas:
A travel-themed dinner party – pick a country and plan all the details around that! Foods, drinks, music, games etc.
A Sunday drive
Call a Snow Day! Even if it didn’t snow :-) no school, no work, and complete with movies and hot cocoa
Make a big deal out of a not so big holiday i.e. arbor day, national dog day, daylight savings etc.
What will you come up with?!
When the tough times hit, remembering back to those memories or looking forward to the next, will make everything feel a little better.
