Learning about Shadows and Reflections We talked a lot about how shadows move with the sun and how the location of the sun determines which way your shadow falls. This was a fun craft to help the kids to visually understand how the sun casts shadows. We used the projector to see the 'shadows' different objects make. We played a game too, I sent each kid to hunt for something in the classroom that was small enough to fit in their hand. I called them up one by one and they placed their object on the projector, the other kids had to guess what the object was! It was fun and some of the items were tricky!!! We have these cool bugs in our classroom, we brought them over to the projector to see what kinds of 'shadows' they would make, because they are clear the kids observed how you could see color....more like a reflection then a shadow! Exploring with different objects. Shadow puppets!! Each kid had a chance to make a shadow puppet on the wall. This is actually my hubby and my son at LACMA in Los Angeles but it was fitting since we were talking about shadows! I made these shadow games by taking objects and photocopying them onto a sheet of paper, then I glued the paper onto a file folder and laminated it. I taped a envelope on the inside to store the pieces. The kids take out the objects and match them to the correct 'shadow'! These are my favorite! Have you ever tried to trace the silhouette of 24... 3 and 4 year olds?!?! It's NOT easy!!! But this is!!! I simply set up the projector and put a chair in front of a white sheet of paper on the wall. I took my CAMERA and turned the flash off, then simply snapped the picture....TA-DA instant silhouettes minus the tracing and cutting!!!! We spent lots of time looking into mirrors and seeing our reflections! Talking about the differences between our shadows and our reflections! Questions to ask when talking about shadows and reflections! Can we see our shadow at night or in the shade? Why not? Do our shadows have colors? Do our reflections have colors? Why do our shadows get bigger and smaller? Why do our shadows move? We also took the kid outside and traced their shadows with chalk then we went out later and had them stand in the same spot.....their shadows moved!!!! We of course also played shadow tag! We also read the book Moon Bears Shadow. It was a GREAT week learning about Shadows and Reflections!!!

1. Sorting: the book series that I used for this theme is Sprinkles 1 from Richmond Publishing; it comes with cutouts for every unit. I made my own flashcards that you can download at my Facebook Group: ESL/EFL preschool Teachers. I divided the board using my big flashcards . Ask each student to identify the big flashcards. Shuffle the cutouts and have individual students come up, take a card and place in the corresponding section on the board. Repeat until all the cutouts have been sorted. I place masking tape on the back of each cutout. Another sorting activity could be sorting the cutouts by color or by item. 2. Graphing: Using the same big flashcards make a bar graph. This activity include collecting data and organizing it in a variety of ways, either be on the board, on the floor. You can use magazine cutouts for the children or simple drawing of their favorite toy. Graphs make counting and comparing meaningful. The graph question here is What is your favorite toy ?. each child comes up with the draing or pictuire of his/her favorite toy and paste it on the board. Continue with all the children and then count the total of each toy. 3. Patterns: with the cutouts you can make any kind of patterns. Patterns are repeated cycles or similar relationships. The concept that children should grasp is that toys have "similarities" such color, as the one I did here. You can do them on the board or have children come up and stand next to each other with the cutout in hand. The most basic pattern is the AB pattern, where two items repeat in an alternating pattern at least two times without interruption, but you can move on to more patterns such as ABC, AABB, ABB if you class is prepared for that. 4 . Lacing toys: I create my own lacing cards using fun foam, a puncher and shoe laces. Lacing is an excellent activity for developing fine motor skills, it also improves hand-eye coordination and concentration. It is "sewing" in and out of the holes. 5. Math: Include math in your theme. I did some ordering by size and reviewing the words big and small, the biggest, the smallest. I got my props from www.childcareland.com. See if they are available, if not I´ll send them to your mail. Write to me: [email protected] Shapes are another thing that can be reviewed. I got mine from the same site. 6. Using the same template, I created a Student of the week necklace. Get the teddy at the Facebook Group mentioned before. 7. Car matching game: There another game that I got from childcareland, see if you can download it from her site. If not, you know you can ask me for it. Please join my Facebook Group ESL/EFL Preschool Teachers and post your pictures and ideas there. I´m still looking for guest bloggers. Let me know if you´re interested.

Our nursery rhyme box had 12 items in it: Star (from our Christmas ornaments) –Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Spider (Homemade from toilet roll) – Little Miss Muffet Tea Pot – I’m a little tea pot Teddy Bear – Teddy bear turn around or Rock a Bye Your Bear Doll – Miss Polly had a Dolly Stuffed Toy Cow – Hey Diddle or Old Mac Donald Owl – The Owl and the Pussy Cat Stuffed Toy Dog – Old Mother Hubbarb or How Much is that Doggie Puppet Mouse – Hickory Dickory Puppet Frog – 5 Little Speckled Frogs Monkey – Monkey Up a Tree Toy Car – Let’s go Driving BENEFITS OF SINGING NURSERY RHYMES: Develop and extend vocabulary. Rhyme – understanding rhyme in our spoken language helps children learn to read. Rhythm- helps children to remember words and develop auditory memory skills. Phonemic awareness – hearing and understanding that words are made up of individual sounds and other word patterns. Fine motor skills and coordination – Encourages actions and movement. This activity is also great for teaching social skills – taking turns. Собственно названия игрушек запоминаем при помощи игры " I see, I see a(...) on the tree". In the basket were the following: goat and boat man and fan chair and bear snake and cake cat and hat duck and truck fox and box mouse and house car and star dog and frog "Волшебный мешочек"- дети наощупь определяют игрушку и называют её или только описывают, чтобы другие могли её назвать - так можно работать с наборами канцелярских предметов, овощей, фруктов и тд. Is it he or she? Can he/she ( вставить новое слово)? No, he/ she can not!/ Yes, he/she can! д. I spy with my little eye I spy with my little eye something beginnig with B . "No!" "Is it a ball?" No!" "Is it a book?" "Yes!" Вариант игры: It is...Is it...? Спрятать 1 игрушку за спиной, и дети спрашивают по очереди - Is it a book? По такому же принципу играем в Have you got...? Можно считать очки за каждый удачный бросок и отрабатывать лексику: on the left/right, really close. Give me this/that red/blou/pink block. Here you are. Thank you. Give me these/those five/six blocks. This block is on/under/in front of... the shelf. Hello! Can( May) I help you? Hello. How much is that ( robot)? Продавец: 10 pounds( dollars) Покупатель: I`ll take it! Продавец:Here you are! Покупатель: Thank you! Продавец: Come again! д. 1. What is it? It is a... 2. What colour is it? It is ... 3. What is its name? It is ... 4. Is it big or small? It is... 5. Do you like it or not? I like it!/ I don`t like it! Zookeeper: Who wants to come to my zoo? Giraffe: I do! Zookeeper: Great! My question is: (building sentences pictured above Is it a giraffe? It is a giraffe.) Giraffe: Yes, I am a giraffe! Zookeeper: Welcome to the zoo! Here is your ticket. What’s in the toy box? What’s in the toy box? What’s in the box? What’s in the box With the big brass locks? There’s a one-eyed ted And a ball that’s red, Some building bricks And a clock that ticks, A plastic boat And a duck that floats, A wind-up car And a silver star, A doll that cries And a plane that flies. That’s what’s in the toy box! That’s what’s in the box!
