Hello Friends, Well, we are now in the 4th quarter. As always, it hardly seems possible that we are in the home stretch! The fun thing about the 4th quarter is how independent and competent my students have become. They know our classroom routines/schedules and are pretty capable of accomplishing most everything that I ask them to do. That makes for a smooth running day which of course, causes a spike in learning - woo hoo! I thought that I would share four STEM activities that we did this past week. I took a class this past summer on the Next Generation Science Standards. An area that fascinated me was the turn that teaching is taking from teacher directed to student generated learning. I have always been a hands-on teacher, but I often would give my students the whole picture before giving them the opportunity to try it out. In my class, I was told that students should be given the opportunity to explore FIRST; then the discussion of what they experienced is turned into the lesson. It is a learning tweak that has challenged me as a teacher. I have had to let go and allow my students to find a path to the outcome without much direction from me. It's been fun watching them start with a hypothesis, test it out, and eventually come to a conclusion. Each of these activities took about 10 minutes. I set a timer and my kiddos rotated through each one. ACTIVITY 1: Your teddy bear is stuck at the bottom of a well. You have a rope. How can you get your animal out of the well? As you can see from the photo above, Teddy was in a bucket in the "well". The chair was the well. My students were told that they could not climb into the well to get Teddy. They had to get both Teddy and the bucket out of the well at the same time. It was interesting to watch them try to figure out what to do. Finally, they realized that if they looped the rope over the handle, they could PULL Teddy AND the bucket out of the well. After rescuing Teddy, they asked if they could put other animal friends in the well. Of course! This allowed them to understand that you need more strength to pull something that is heavy compared to something that is light. ACTIVITY 2: How does a parachute work? Follow the steps to make a parachute. Tie your parachute to a small toy. Have a race between a toy NOT tied to a parachute and a toy that IS tied to a parachute. Which toy hits the floor first? If you were on the top of the mountain and needed to get down, would you jump or use a parachute? Why? This activity was hard for my kinders; mainly because it involved tying knots! If you have a parent volunteer, I would suggest stationing them at this activity to help with the tying. I also suggest that you use lightweight paper and as well as a lightweight toy. We used regular copy paper and it was really too heavy. We also tied a clothespin to the bottom of the yarn which seemed too heavy. We did this activity as a follow-up to our gravity explorations. Their task was to understand how a parachute creates AIR RESISTANCE that slows down the effect of gravity. The fun part in this activity was that that they were able to stand up on a "mountain" (ladder) and drop their parachute! ACTIVITY 3: Set up the empty bottles. Try to knock the bottles down without using your hands. How can you knock the most bottles down at the same time? This was a simple activity to explore PUSH. The hardest part of the activity was collecting the empty bottles! We used empty water bottles. My husband suggested that I weight them somehow with rice or sand. BUT, I did not and the kids still had a good time and learned something about push and strength. ACTIVITY 4: How can you get the pom-pom from one end to the other without using your hands? I wanted my kids to experiment with wind power and to come to the conclusion that wind is a force that PUSHES. I applied blue tape on two sides of a table. I laid out various sizes of pom-poms in which to experiment. They used their wind power to PUSH the pom-poms from one side of the table to another. The next day, we discussed our conclusions. They then did a recording sheet showing their results. If you would like the recording sheets and the station signs, click HERE. This is a Google doc. If your school blocks sites that are outside the network, you will be unable to access this download at school. You will have to download it at home. Until next time, my friends! Blessings,

I am posting this lesson a little late. We did the lesson over a week ago, but later that afternoon, Jenna started running a fever and both girls were really sick for a week. I'm praising God that they are finally feeling better! We were in survival mode for a while...so, I'm a little behind on posting! The last story lesson that I did was about Abraham and Isaac. I was surprised to see that my storybook Bibles skipped right on to Joseph in one and Leah and Rachel in the other! I think there are a few important names and stories to introduce our preschoolers to in between those two stories! So, for Isaac and Rebekah, I relied on Google to help me find a children's version of the story! Here's the lesson: 1. Verse - no new verse today. This lesson comes from Genesis 24. 2. Lesson - Pray with your child about the lesson. Review the past Bible story about Abraham and Sarah and how they had baby Isaac. Then review the story of Abraham and Isaac and how God provided a lamb. When Isaac grew up, his dad (Abraham) thought it was time for him to get married. So Abraham asked his servant, to go to the place where his family lived to find a wife for Isaac. Here is the story... Read a children's version of the story. (Since this story was in neither of my storybook Bibles, I used this one I found on the web, at www.childrenstory.info: http://www.childrenstory.info/biblestoryforchild/chdbblisaacandrebekah.html (I did add a couple of sentences to the story because I thought they helped the story a little. After "When I ask a girl for a drink, let her offer to get water for all of my camels also." I added, "Then I will know that she is the wife you have chosen for Isaac." And also, at the very end of the story, I added, "So, Rebekah left her family and traveled back with the servant to be Isaac's wife and Isaac loved Rebekah very much.") Summarize the story and talk about how the people in the story were obeying God. Abraham was obeying God by looking for a wife from his own family. Abraham's servant obeyed Abraham and prayed to God for help and obeyed Him. Rebekah obeyed God by leaving her family and her home to go marry Isaac. 3. Craft - Coloring page. I found this cute coloring page that nicely illustrates the story! You can find it here at biblewise.com. Jenna didn't finish hers...maybe another day! 4. Song - "The Lord is my Shepherd." #9 on Wee Sing Bible Songs 5. End by reviewing the main names in the story: Isaac and Rebekah! **Awesome side note: I found our Bible verse cards that I had misplaced in our move!! (very excited about this!) They were so "wisely" tucked neatly into a box of craft supplies. Good thing Jenna was asking me for stickers, or I never would have found them!!

Today's lesson is Isaac & Rebekah. The chapter ends with the statement that Isaac loved Rebekah, so for today's project, I used the love theme! I purchased the foamy door hangers and printed the Jesus Loves Me! with the owls. We also added the small foamy hearts. They loved this project! And it can be used for almost any lesson for almost any age! More info and the free downloads at the end of the lesson. Review: Last week we learned about Abraham and his wife Sarah. They had a son named Isaac and God promised Abraham that his descendants would be so many; they would be like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Remember that Abraham was 100 years old when he had Isaac and Sarah laughed when she heard she’d be having a baby at 90! God said she would, so she did! Lesson (found in Genesis 24): Sarah was 127 when she died. Abraham was old and told his oldest servant that he wanted him to “Please go to my country and from my family, find a wife for Isaac.” But the servant said that maybe she won’t want to follow me back to this land, so should I take Isaac with me? But Abraham told him not to take Isaac, but that he would find the right wife willing to travel back with him to be with Isaac. The servant took ten camels with him and traveled to Mesopotamia. He made the camels kneel down outside the city by a well. It was in the evening and the women came to the well to get their water. Abraham’s servant prayed to God that the woman that was right for Isaac would say “drink and I will give your camels a drink also” when I ask her to draw water for me. Before he was done praying, Rebekah came to the well. She had her pitcher on her shoulder to carry her water. Rebekah was very beautiful. When she filled her pitcher with the well water, Abraham’s servant asked her if he could drink a little water from her pitcher. And very quickly, she told him to have a drink. When he was done drinking, she said “I will also get enough water for your camels to drink.” She poured the water into a trough for the camels and got enough water from the well for all his camels. Abraham’s servant kept quiet wondering if this was the right wife for Isaac. When the camels were finished drinking the water, he took a gold nose ring and two bracelets and gave them to her. He asked her about her family and asked if there was room where he could stay with her family. She told him who her father was and said that there was a room he could stay in and enough straw for the camels. He bowed his head and said a prayer to God thanking Him for showing him the right woman. Rebekah ran home and told her mother what had happened. Her brother Laban (La’ ban) went to the well after he saw the new jewelry that his sister was wearing. He told the servant to “Come! We have a place ready for you and room for the camels!” They took care of the camels and washed the servant’s feet and gave them food. But Abraham’s servant said “I can’t eat until I tell you why I am here. I am Abraham’s servant. He is very wealthy. He had a son when he was very old, and I was sent here to find a wife for his son Isaac. When your sister did the things that I was waiting for, I knew she was the woman that God thinks is the right one for Isaac.” Laban told Abraham's servant "This is from God, so take Rebekah and go back home. She will be Isaac’s wife as God wants." Abraham’s servant took out jewelry made from silver and gold to give to Rebekah. He also gave her clothing. He also gave gifts to her mother and brother. But Rebekah’s mom wanted her to stay home, at least 10 days before she left. The servant said they really needed to leave. They asked Rebekah and she said she’d leave right away. She took her nurse and maids with her. I handed out necklaces/bracelets I purchased here. Isaac went into the fields to think in the evening. When he looked up, he saw camels coming. Rebekah saw Isaac and got off the camel. She asked the servant who he was and when she found out it was Isaac, she pulled a veil over her face. The servant told Isaac where he had been and everything that had happened. Isaac married her and he loved her. Our craft today is door hangers! I purchased these heart foam door hangers at hobby Lobby. I wanted to use the Isaac loved Rebekah for the lesson, and the Jesus loves us for the general theme. I printed the owls, Hoo Loves You?, and the Jesus Loves You!. I cut them out and put them through my sticker maker. I let the kids add some small foamy hearts and they loved it! There was only room for one owl, so we used the boy/girl owl and let them pick that way. You can print what you need, except for the hearts, in the following downloads. There is also a door hanger pattern if you want to print onto cardstock to make yours. The first one is for one student. This download is enough for 10 students. Click here to print.
