Thanks so much for stopping by for the third part of my series on Classroom Management! If you missed my first two blog posts in this series, feel free to check out Part One: The Wheel of Choice and Part Two: I-Statements and Apologies. Today's focus is Part Three: Cool Down and Reflect. As someone who is always on the go myself, I can totally relate to my students when it comes to sometimes not wanting to take a break. It seems like kids just want to go, go, go, and while this is great in many ways, sometimes it is important to teach kids to stop and think every once in a while about their actions. Teaching children to take a break to reflect allows them to think about how their actions impact themselves and others, and it encourages them to consider alternative behavior choices that might have a better outcome in the future. To teach students to take a break to think about their actions, I really like to implement a Cool Down Spot in my classroom. This spot, which doesn't actually have to be a permanent location (a bucket of cool down tools works great, too!), gives students a safe place to take a break and simply think. I try to make this spot a safe zone, which means students are not "in trouble" when they come here, and they can do so by their own choice, although I do sometimes give students the option of going to the Cool Down Spot when I can see that they need a little help in regulating their behavior. I like to keep a timer with my Cool Down Tools as well as some hand fidgets and stress reliever balls. When students visit the Cool Down Spot, they follow the procedures below, which we practice at the beginning of the year. Here is one of our most-used Cool Down Tools...The Feelings Chart. Students are encouraged to think about how they feel about the choice they made. Sometimes having the visual really helps students to identify exactly which emotion they are feeling, and it helps them branch out from the typical answer of feeling "sad." Here is an example of a reflection sheet I keep at the Cool Down Spot. I keep a few different versions in the Tool Box so that students can choose to write or draw depending on their level. When students feel they are finished reflecting, they are welcome to return to their spot with the rest of the class. Sometimes, I will chat briefly with a student to help them in processing their reflection, but other times, I don't always do this. I think the most important idea to remember is that this is not a punishment, but rather, a learning experience. If you would like to download my Cool Down Spot Tools and Reflection Sheets for your own classroom use, click the image above to head to my TeachersPayTeachers store for the FREEBIE. Thanks so much for popping in, and I hope that these resources can be helpful to you as I know they have really made a difference in my own classroom! Are you ready for a Monster Truck Rally? Let me hear you scream ! Yes, my friends, that is how I started math this week. My students have been losing their minds and begging to do math. But get this... they are begging to do HOMEWORK! Can we do monster truck homework too !?! So, what is all this excitement about? This unit! It has 10 plus days of fabulous double digit addition practice. This unit helps them practice with and without regrouping. Just in case you think your girls might not dig this… I give you “ladybug truck” below. They get 2 minutes to decorate their truck before beginning. All pages come in full color seen above and black line master seen below. I teach double digit addition using a flag. The flag is a SUPER helpful math tool when they are just learning. It's like training wheels. They use it a while then ditch it when they are ready to fly. They divide the ones and tens place with the flag pole. To provide a visual cue on where to carry a flag is drawn. I provide the flags on the paper for the kids at the beginning of the unit but at the end of the unit the child must draw them if they still need them. After 6 days of practice we move on to the “DEMOLITION DERBY”. If you have never been to a derby, it is really fun ( in a smash a beer with your forehead kind of way) . Every summer my dad took me to a derby so I have fond memories. This is what a derby looks like. The last car standing, wins money and hopefully avoids an ambulance ride. I set up our white board to look like this. Here is how the Demolition Derby works: The kids solve and circle if they regroup. The car's side with the most regrouping wins. The winning car gets the winners cup and the losing car gets pulled off the whiteboard and put into the auto body shop. My students were losing their minds as we did this !!! They have never had so much fun! This has my kids engaged, excited, and happy these last few weeks! Cue the angels singing! Then they got to make their own trucks and make a HUGE Demolition Derby Bulletin Board!!! Their little heads were about to explode! I love the orange chevron lettering. It’s the small things that make me happy! You’ll be happy too because the lettering is included in the unit. The kids were dying over who was crashing into who. I cared the most about the math that is found underneath. This has been 2 solid weeks of learning and fun! I can’t wait to do this again next year! Do you want to try it out? Want to win one? First to comment wins and two rafflecopter winners as well. You must be a follower to win. If you are the first to comment, leave your email :0) a Rafflecopter giveaway

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.
