It's nearly impossible to dislike the way the french do things. From the fashion and food to their interiors and architecture, there are definitely a few admirable features of the french lifestyle that we all wish to recreate in our own lives. Here are three french interior design rules to follow when designing spaces in your home. Enjoy! Image courtesy of Pinterest. Preserve Architectural Details Living in an old home is a luxury many of us have. Whatever the age of your home, it's important to let your home's features speak for themselves. However you choose to do this is up to you (check out our contrasting trim blog post here!), but the easiest suggestion we can give is to keep things simple. Whether it be the trim that adorns your bedroom windows to the or even the way the hardwood floors are laid, architectural details will add more to a design than you can imagine. The sense of permanence that comes with floorboards or original ceiling embellishments only adds to the coziness and charm of any design and gives a basis to whatever design style you decide to furnish your home in. Don't Forget About Color As much as we can advocate for simplicity, there is always a place for color-- in every design. From the chair in the corner of the bedroom to the wallpaper on the bathroom walls, color does more than you think. Not only does it add interest in a space, but it reflects who you are as a designer, amateur or professional. Adding an element of color will play off the surrounding neutrals and create an overall beautifully balanced interior. Image courtesy of Pinterest. Image courtesy of Pinterest. There's no way to avoid following trends, but following every trend in every interior design magazine is where some people go wrong. Sure, the magazine you just pulled out of your mailbox may say that grey is the new white, but sticking to what works best for your furniture and home is the most important. Classics are always the best option, especially when investing in nice furniture and accessories. Try to avoid transient styles of furniture to ensure that your custom sofa will look great in your living room for however many years you have it. Image courtesy of Pinterest. Their simplicity and effortlessness are highly admirable and leave us wanting to create the same looks in our homes. English Traditions makes this creation easier than you could imagine with our connections to vendors and manufacturers all over France. Why mix colors when just one will do? It might fly in the face of typical interior design advice, which advocates balance above all things, but sometimes a room that fully embraces a single color can be strangely delightful. Layering the same color in different shades—or a handful of colors in very similar hues—can create a rich, immersive design experience that’s as stylish as it is unexpected.
