In 2018, city legislation made it easier for homeowners to convert garages into ADUs. When this news was announced we immediately knew that our own garage conversion was imminent and at the end of 2020, in the middle of the pandemic mind you, Mario and I decided to convert our garage into a livable space!
This simple garage apartment is an excellent choice as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), guest house, or even a space for remote work or a clubhouse. Its straightforward square layout and modern exterior make it a versatile and functional option. A striking garage door, 18 feet wide and 9 feet high, opens to provide parking space for two cars without walls hindering the area. Stairs run along the left side of the garage take you to an open space that includes a kitchen, a breakfast area, and a living room. This design maximizes space efficiency and encourages an open and inviting atmosphere. The smart layout continues on the upper floor, where you'll find the bedroom and the full bathroom. This design aims to combine functionality and style in a space that caters to various needs, whether as a standalone home or as a functional extension of your existing property.
