As the end of the school year approaches, we often get burned out and I find that it is the perfect time to change things up and create a unit study for us all to enjoy, explore, and learn together. Often, we explore something that has been the topic of recent conversation, but with Arbor Day and Ea
We have been learning all about trees this week! We started off by reading a book about oak trees. Then the lion cubs made a simple chart showing the life cycle of oak trees. We learned about the parts of a tree and I created a pictorial input chart while teaching the students. Then they drew and labeled the parts of a tree in their science journals. Next, we unscrambled a sentence about an acorn which included "little" which is one of the high frequency words that we learned this week. You can find my pack Unscramble This Sentence in my TpT store. We also learned about pine trees. I began by creating a Brace Map showing the parts of a pine tree. Then everyone filled in their own Brace Map. And the highlight was making these cute 3D trees from Robin Sellers (Christmas Tree Craft). We had fun making them and telling each other about the life cycle of pine trees.

Item description All About Me Apple Tree Craft We use this activity during the very first week of school. Every student makes an About Me Apple Tree to share with the class, so we could learn a little about each other. I make one too. The apples can be copied onto red, golden, yellow, or green paper to provide variety. I let the kids use markers (even though it is early in the year), so it’s good to have a lot of extra apples for mistakes. They can write words or draw pictures on each apple. I provide each student with one “I am” apple for their age and three or four “I like” apples. You can also choose to have students draw themselves on the tree trunk. There is a blank trunk template provided. This Activity is Part of a Bundle Craftivity Growing Bundle This cutting, pasting, and writing craftivity is perfect for preK and kindergarten students. It requires good fine motor cutting skills and the ability to assemble. Enjoy!

Trees are familiar components of many landscapes and have been vital in determining the ecology of our planet as well as the development of human cultures and communities. Yet how much do we really understand about how they work? This updated and revised edition provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of tree biology and ecology and presents the state-of-the-art discoveries in this area. The wonders and mysteries of trees are explored throughout the book and questions such as why leaves turn spectacular colours in the autumn, how water reaches the top of the tallest trees, or why the study of genetics has caused so many name changes in trees are all brilliantly answered. Written with a non-technical approach, this book will be a valuable source of reference for students and those with a less formal interest in this fascinating group of plants.

“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." Matthew 24:32-44 One would have to be a recluse closed in and totally unattached from any media not to know that Christmas is coming. The music is everywhere, and the TV shows remind us of the shortness of our time until the day. We watched A Christmas Carol last night the Alistair Sims version, which is my favorite and always puts me in the Christmas spirit. Sometimes, it is hard to remain in Advent, in the season of contemplation and preparation, when the whole world is celebrating and spending, it is hard to hold oneself to prayer, preparation and humility while lights blink insistently. Jesus is helping his followers to understand that our lives are faith are not a constant celebration, and when things are tough and challenges overwhelm us we are not to see ourselves as abandoned but rather as surrounded by God's love. He wanted them to know that the terrors and tortures were coming and that these were not a sign of failure but a sign of God's love and presence in our lives. We are invited to understand that God is infinitely able to help us through all the times of our lives, no matter how overwhelmed we get. Today I ask God to help me have a humble heart, to be unmoved by the anxiety and greed of this world and rather be caught up in the nearness and love of God that is present today. May my Advent be a time of readiness, making room in my heart for more love and service, making space for the holy spirit and the enemies that become friends. May we all open our hearts this season, as we prepare for a new incarnation of God's love in our lives.

Tree slice art, made from a real tree. Each print is made by hand by printing directly from the roots of a tree. This tree grew in a beautiful area in the Wasatch Mountains near the town of Huntsville and at the foot of the Snow Basin Ski Resort. The wood that is used to make the prints is gathered from already fallen trees. As an artist, my purpose is to reveal the artistry that exists in nature and to present it in a way that is accessible enough to hang on a wall in your home. I also want to bring our attention to our impact on the landscapes that surround us. These tree ring prints help us see our place in a much larger historical context and hopefully each ring makes us reflect on the limited time that we have in this beautiful landscape. Each print is like a fingerprint from mother nature. All prints are made by hand using the traditional woodblock method. Frame sold separately.
