Saint Gemma Galgani (1878-1903) was born in Italy in the mid 1800s. She was one of eight children. Early in her life she took on the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings, since their mother and their father died before she was nineteen years old. Later, after being cured of a serious illness when she prayed a novena to St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows (who had died sixteen years before she was born, and who was known throughout Italy as a saintly man), she wanted to enter religious life. However, so many problems of health and even money came up that she became convinced that God wanted her to stay at home. So she did, and remained devoted to daily Mass, the rosary, the Blessed Mother, and Jesus, particularly in His Passion. She experienced some mystical events at this time, and later received the stigmata (the marks of nail-wounds in her hands and feet). In 1902, inspired by a desire to save souls, she asked God to allow her to suffer for them. Shortly afterward, she became seriously ill and died at the age of 25 on Holy Saturday, April 11, 1903. Her feast-day is April 11.
