James Brunt creates elaborate ephemeral artworks using the natural materials he finds in forests, parks, and beaches near his home in Yorkshire, England. This form of land art, popularized and often associated with fellow Brit Andy Goldsworthy, involves detailed patterns, textures, and shapes formed using multiples of one kind of material. Brunt collects twigs, rocks, and leaves and arranges them in mandala-like spirals and concentric circles. He photographs his finished work to document it before nature once again takes hold of his materials. More
The rocks by the River Roeburn are lovely and flat and ideal for my style of rock sculpture. There was no wind to speak of so I set about making an equilibrium stack near to the magic mushroom stack I mentioned here. I've made this design a few times now and having looked at the photographs often and possibly not thought about the process of making one much, I set about making it expecting it to be easy. It got a major wobble on almost from the start but as long as you are careful and meticulous, when there is no wind it should stay upright. But despite that once I had got half way my body decided that some nerves and adrenaline might be a good idea. My body obviously thought I was going to get crushed by falling stones which became considerably more likely as the adrenaline was making my hands shake! This Land Art stuff is supposed to be relaxing and yet here I was like a coiled spring! Anyway despite all that I persevered and without any wind it should stay put, and it did. I will probably go back there tomorrow and I wonder whether it will still be standing? Perhaps a psilocybin pixie will have knocked it over?! Land Art Site Land Art Blog
Jon Foreman discovered land art while in college and immediately fell in love with it. He felt that the natural world had more in it to be explored, particularly where he lives, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Stone Work Stones provide the bones of a landscape, they give structure and substance and can be used to reshape your property. Miskovsky Landscaping has an extensive collection of stones to work with, and they can also utilize stones from the homeowner’s property in

A scroll through Jon Foreman’s Instagram proves just how prolific the Wales-based artist has been this year—he’s collaborated with artist James Brunt (previously) on a few projects, too. From coils arranged in gradients to whirling patterns embedded in the sand, Foreman’s land art sprawls across beaches and grassy patches in an impressive number of locations. Each work is precise in composition, perfectly matching size, hue, and shape into hypnotic works that contrast the man-made construction with their organic backdrops. More

The wildly prolific Wales-based artist Jon Foreman has spent much of 2021 on a new batch of mesmerizing land pieces. Expanding on the swirling, organic shapes he’s known for, many of his recent works take on minimal, geometric formations in diagonal stripes or colorful, concentric circles. Foreman created a 2022 calendar featuring some of the compositions shown here—ordering instructions are on his Instagram—and you can find prints of his ephemeral pieces in his shop. More
Canadian photographer Peter Riedel creates works of art by balancing stones.
Imagine trying to balance a chest of drawers on just one of its legs, on top of a boulder. Adrian Gray can do that with rocks on a beach, with quite breathtaking results.
I know of just a few artists that are living that create landscape art that I want to celebrate. I hope, through writing this blog, I will continually discover more. Lew French is one of them. I will be highlighting others in time. Lew is a stone mason whose creations make me stop and stare […]

Matthew Simmonds (previously) sculpts miniature architectural structures from raw stone. Part of his interest in producing these pieces is centered around the contrast between the carved precision of his hand against the rough nature of the natural material he chooses for each work. The pieces’ concept also deals with this human influence on raw environments, humans physically displaying their beliefs and achievements by building large physical forms. “In my sculptures, I am concerned with the common human achievement; the cultural expressions thrown up by different societies, and how the various cultural traditions interact with and influence each other,” said Simmonds in an interview with Colossal.
