About The Artwork This artwork is currently exhibited at Palazzo Gio' Imperiale, Genoa. The characteristics of the statuary marble are sometimes the presence of small gray dots and shaded streaks, ranging from brown to gray. Being able to get the best marble in Carrara is not easy, since there are so many deposits and sawmills that is easy to get lost. Once I had tried to go to the quarry, but on those streets, the car grazes with truck loaded with block of marble so I renounced. Anyway I go to the sculptors school of Carrara who always have the statuary. About the sculpture: the whole surface is uniformly smooth and polished. Clusters of wooden spheres bubble up the fingertips and bodies of the children in Willy Verginer’s poetic sculptures. The Italian artist (previously) contrasts realistic carvings of adolescent figures with elements of whimsy and imagination. Alongside the forms that evoke childhood games are thick stripes of monochromatic paint, which wrap around the sculptures and bisect them in unusual places. Whether a pastel, neutral tone, or black, the color is symbolic and used to convey subtle messages. More
Rondle West is mostly self-taught. His assemblage sculptures reflects a fondness of found objects and consists of metal, wood, toys and spray paint, as well as different types of adhesives. He uses cartoons characters, pop culture references and science fiction or technological elements—all forged into one statement on religion, evolution and science—and the result is often so overwhelming that one struggles to comprehend the different levels of texture at play. ’You never quite know where to direct your eye first,’ he says. ‘For me they’re like little mini stage sets. They tell a story. It’s like looking at a theater production.’ West lives in Cincinnati and Palm Springs.
