Silent letters can be a tricky thing to teach and tricky for our young students to learn. That's why I like to save them for Halloween week. Ghost, or silent, letters are perfect for this spooky holiday! I always build it up that I am about to teach them something that's really scary. You can even turn out the lights and break out the flashlight to get them totally engaged. You can just see the anticipation on their faces! We talk about ghosts and what they think ghosts are like and what they do. Last year, I even had a student get up and tell a ghost story! {Whatever works!} That's when I introduce ghost letters. One fun activity we do is to go on a Ghost Letter Hunt. You will need some small white paper bags for this activity to make the ghosts into puppets. When we do go on a word hunt, I allow students to look anywhere around the room. That includes in books. For this hunt, Halloween books are perfect! You may even wish to use your anchor text for the week. After students make the fun ghost puppets, they can record the words they find on their puppet. Because there are so many ghost letter combinations, I give each student only one to look for during the hunt. Looking for all five different types could get very overwhelming. Ghost letters can be difficult to find, so students will really have to dig! Students will love flying their ghost puppets around when they are finished! The craftivity can be found {HERE}. I have kept the same word work rotations for years. I incorporate them into centers, as well as into quick whole group activities. BINGO can be played during either time. I usually did BINGO whole group. Students write their words for the week on a blank BINGO board in any order. I like to change out the BINGO chips seasonally. Target had so many cute Halloween erasers this year, and these ghosts were perfect for ghost letters! Is this tiny cauldron not the cutest?! They are perfect for holding our BINGO chips! I found them at Hobby Lobby and wanted to buy all they had but I had to restrain myself. I don't know why, but this has always been my students' favorite game. We do it EVERY.SINGLE.WEEK. And it never gets old....to them. Lol. It's just a simple board game with words from our word study for the week. The game pieces are erasers from Target. I always try to throw in syllables during word work. Just to keep with the Halloween spirit, I added the headers to these party favor bags from Hobby Lobby. I always buy these on clearance after Halloween to use the following year for sorts. With most centers, I try to include a recording sheet for them to practice writing the words. I typically put them in a SmartPal to save on copies. Students will need lots of support with those pesky ghost letters, so I keep these posters up during our study. We refer to them LOTS!!! Word sorts are critical to word study. We do so many sorts! I am very picky about how my students do them, too. I teach the routine a lot at the beginning of the year, so it becomes very natural to them. They have to read the words and the headers aloud every time. Again, I have them practice writing the words after the sort. I have included some odd ball high frequency words in the sorts, as well. You can find blank cards also so that you can add your own words to the sort. I have had the same word work routine for years because it works for me. Our word study skills on our end of year assessments are always really good, so I am a believer in these activities! Plus, the students have fun learning our new words and spelling patterns each week! I also include some whole group printables, push and say letters {SO IMPORTANT to use}, ABC order center, rhyming center, and much more! I hope you have as much fun teaching ghost letters as I do! What strategies do you use to teach this tricky spelling pattern? This pack is on sale this weekend, so be sure to check it out by clicking the pic below! Have a great weekend!

B and D reversals are something I see often in my students reading and writing. I've posted before {here} about some of the errors that I often see in struggling readers and how I correct the errors while reading {here}. Today, I'm sharing with you some of the activities that I use to help students practice differentiating between the letters B and D. Sometimes it seems like my students really just need so much practice and lots of visual cues to help them out. I like to give my students consistency with how I describe the formation of B and D. I always use the sayings "bat before the ball" for B and "doughnut on a stick" for D. This helps my students remember what part of the letter they need to form first. I keep some of these types of activities handy all the time. I can easily pull them out whenever we have a few extra minutes or if I just think my students need some more discrimination practice between the two letters. You can check these activities out by clicking on the picture below or {here}. One of my students favorite games is this B and D Zap! game that's a freebie in my store. We play this game as a "speed" game. I set my timer for 3 minutes and students must quickly say the correct letter to keep a card. We try to do as many as we can in 3 minutes. There are special cards that students can pull, such as the Zap! card. The Zap! card means students must give all of their cards back to me. There is also a skip and reverse card to keep the game fun. My students love playing Zap! You can check it out by clicking on the picture below or {here}. I hope this gives you some helpful ideas for your students!
Today I thought I'd share my Saxon workbook pages that I use for the girls. For the main lesson/mixed practice. I just print them double sided. I print 40 { double sided } of them, add a cover and a backside, and staple them into a book. The other side. And the score card! I also print this double sided too - because well, they do a TON of lessons and you really want to keep all the scores together. Thanks for visiting.

Do you have a class that has too much energy? You've heard of Race for the Cure, this race will cure something a little different. Phonics Relay Races can help with the wiggles, irritability, and limited attention span that students seem to magically "catch" around Halloween, Easter, or other sugar-fest holidays. To play: 1. Divide your students into groups. If they are particular wiggly the day you decide to do this, you need to have more groups so they will run more often. 2. Students line up in straight lines behind a line. Beside each team is a different colored bucket. Each team is assigned a bucket. Dollar Tree has these buckets for $1. 3. The race part of this activity involves students running to a hula hoop that is at a designated place, finding letters that are lying inside the hula loop, bringing the correct letters back to their team and putting the letters in their team's bucket. Each team has their own hula hoop. P.E. teachers usually have hula hoops that they will loan you. You can use letters used for bulletin boards or foam letters like these: You can buy foam letters like these in the baby bath tub supplies at Target or Wal-Mart. 4. The teacher will give clues for what letters the people at the beginning of the line needs to find in the hula hoop. After giving the clue, the teacher will say "go", the student will run to the hula hoop, find the correct letter, and put it in their bucket. 5. The winner is decided at the end. The team or teams that have all the correct letters in their bucket is/are the winners. The great thing about this game is it can be adapted to any grade level. Examples of clues: *Clue #1: This letter is the sound you hear at the end of the word "globe". *Clue #2: These are the letters you hear at the beginning of the word "chain". *Clue #3: These are the 3 letters you hear at the end of the word "coming". *Clue #4: This is the sound you hear in the middle of the word "zap". You can also make this game into a Math Relay Race game. It can be adapted to any grade level. *Clue #1: What is the answer: 12 + 3 = ___ *Clue #2: What is the answer: How many sides does an octagon have? *Clue #3: What is the answer: 4 X 8 = ___ *Clue #4: What is the answer: How many minutes are in a quarter hour? This game burns off excess energy while reviewing skills your students have studied. It's a WIN-WIN!
