With all the terrible bushfires here last summer, it never felt right to post about trivial stuff when so much bigger things were going on. So only now do I feel it's appropriate to share our Annual Girls Christmas Dinner from last year, which is always one of my favourite nights.

Christmas is less than a week away, and I can hardly believe it! I really haven't even begun to wrap my head around the fact, that right behind it is a new year, with all the new possibilities it will bring. I have to say though, I think my favorite part about having our Christmas decor up, is the glow of the white lights at night. That is always the part I miss the most when it comes time to take down the decorations. So to savor every bit of it, I wanted to share some pics of tree all aglow at night, and I've teamed up with some blogging friends who are also sharing little bits around their home of Christmas lights at Night. I've included the lyrics to one of my favorite Christmas songs throughout the post, for a special nighttime Christmas lights tour. Enjoy!

Simple Christmas traditions for your family to enjoy what matters most. Have a more meaniningful Christmas that will always be remembered.
One of my favorite times of year for walking around downtown Portland at night began last week. The month between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a beautiful one for wandering the streets in downtown Portland, camera or no. In part it is all the lights strung up on the streets that look like miniature heavens dangling just out of reach. In part it is the cold weather that makes those mugs of hot chocolate blissful. In part it is giant trees lit up with a thousand lights and in part it is watching people, young and old, enthralled by it all. In part it is the click-clack of the horse-hooves and the rattle of carriage rides. In part it is the carols playing from the various department stores. It is just a wonderful time of year all around. Of course photos like this have gotten a bit trickier as they have banned tripods from Pioneer Courthouse Square without a permit. A few months ago I put writing a letter of complaint to the city on my "to-do list". If you knew the size of my to-do list you would realize the joke there. I went as far as looking up the city code and while it does prohibit the erecting of any temporary structure such as a tent, bench, tables, etc it never actually mentions tripods. In fact the code does allow "personal accessories" such as walkers, wheelchairs and backpacks. In my reasoning I think a tripod is a lot closer to personal accessory than temporary structure. I think I am going to do some further research into this one now though. My next step will be to actually talk to someone in the city government about this. I am curious as to how easy it is to get a permit and if it costs or not. If it is easy and free, I don't mind playing by those rules. I helped on a commercial shoot a couple of months ago and we were shooting on the Eastbank Esplanade. The organizers had to get permission from the city to shoot there, and they actually had an easy time doing it. Sure they could have just shown up and shot away and probably gotten away with it, but all it took was a quick phone call and the permission was freely given. If that is the case here, I would like to know. But otherwise I think it a bit ridiculous that they have disallowed tripods (and all the nice photography that can come of it) in the square. Of course, you can just get Grandma to go with you and mount your tripod to her walker... Actually I had a security guard tell me all I had to do was balance my tripod on my feet so it was not actually touching the square and I would be fine. That mostly worked well except my tripod has three legs and I do not. Ah well. Any other Portlanders done any research into what it takes to get a tripod permit for the Square?
