American Girl announced on Wednesday that Cinderella, Tiana and Ariel are the newest toys to be added to the brand's American Girl Disney Princess Collector Doll series. The items are available now online and at American Girl retail stores nationwide for $125 each.
Nice to see you again, Kirsten, Samantha, Molly, Felicity, Addy, and Josefina!

I think the American Girl Mini dolls are adorable and have collected almost all of them. (I’m missing three. 😉) The one thing I hear from Dandridge House visitors upon seeing my mini collection is their surprise at just how many versions there are! That’s what we are going to discuss. [caption id=attachment_1195 align=alignnone width=1272] My American Girl Mini Doll Collection[/caption] In 1995, Pleasant Company created a new line of dolls named Girl of Today. These dolls were to represent the modern girl and came with six blank books so you could create her story yourself. Also, released in the Girl of Today line were five miniature historical dolls with miniature books. They were created to be an American Girl doll for your modern doll. These dolls were six-inch versions of the historical doll line. [gallery ids=1209,1210 type=rectangular] The little historical dolls have cloth bodies, vinyl limbs and glass eyes. They have little neck strings, tiny wigs and their clothes are exactly like their larger versions. The mini doll’s original price was $20 each or all five for $90. Mini Josefina became available in 1997 after the release of the full-size doll. [caption id=attachment_1194 align=alignnone width=1531] Original glass eyed dolls vs. Decal newer versions[/caption] Mattel bought Pleasant Company in 1998 and the mini dolls were changed. Their glass eyes were replaced with painted decals and their wigs were replaced with rooted hair. They also became taller. Below is a mini Kirsten I found that had been chewed on, I took her apart so you can see her parts. The mini Samantha is one that I bought directly from AG at the end of 1998. Most collector sites claim that the wig/eye change took place in 2000, but mine came with the changes before 2000. I was surprised and confused when she arrived, because the catalog was still showing glass eyed dolls. [caption id=attachment_1197 align=alignnone width=1555] Wigs vs. Rooted Hair[/caption] Since the first series of Minis were considered part of the Girl of Today line, the dolls came in a tiny doll box inside of a Girl of Today box. The boxes shown are from the Felicity mini doll I ordered in 1996. As the dolls changed, so did the boxes. When the 18” doll boxes added a window, so did the mini boxes. The price stayed at $20 until 2007, and rose to $22 in 2008. In 2012 they sold for $24 and now are $24.99. Here are all of the Felicity boxes over the years from 1996 to present. As American Girl brought out new historical and best-friend dolls, they also released them in mini version. The mini dolls were no longer marketed only as a doll for your doll, but as their own line. In 2005, Felicity’s Meet Outfit was changed. Here is my collection of mini historical and best-friends after the original six. Over the years, the clothing became more form-fitting and things like real buttons became embroidered. In 2011, American Girl celebrated their 25th year and released 12 special edition mini dolls, one each month. Each historical doll was brought out wearing their Christmas outfits with the exception of Kaya and Kirsten. Kaya was dressed in her Adorned Deerskin Dress and Kirsten was wearing her Winter Outfit. (I’m guessing that tiny St. Lucia wreath wouldn’t have been easy to make, but it sure would’ve been cute! 😉) Best-friend dolls weren’t included in the special editions. Each doll was released with a mini version of their Christmas book except Kaya, Marie-Grace and Cécile. Kaya was released with her book Kaya’s Hero. Marie-Grace and Cécile were released with their Meet Books. Each doll came with a sticker that had their name on it. A special display shelf was sold to showcase the 12 dolls and came with twelve mini doll stands. There are twelve silver ovals on the shelf to put the doll’s name sticker on. When these were released, I already had several mini dolls and wanted to display all of them on a shelf, so I bought six shelves. All but one is filled. [caption id=attachment_1202 align=alignnone width=1407] 2011 Special Edition Mini Dolls[/caption] Saige was the first Girl of the Year to get a mini doll in 2013. Since then, there has been a mini Girl of the Year each year. She comes dressed in her Meet outfit. Lea had two mini dolls, the regular version and a special edition that was only sold in stores (not online). The special edition Lea is dressed in her hiking outfit and came with a rainforest display stand. I do not yet own mini Girl of the Year 2018 Luciana. Out of American Girl's modern doll collection of Tenney, Logan and Z Yang, only Tenney was given a mini doll. As of now, no boys have been made mini. [gallery ids=1198,1241,1249 type=rectangular] In 2015, the biggest change that came to the mini dolls was hard vinyl bodies. The dolls are thinner and are more mature looking in the face. The historical line was re-named BeForever and all the 18 dolls and minis were given a new Meet outfit. The BeForever mini Molly has been released and her spot on the shelf is waiting for her. Her stock photo is shown in Molly Through the Years. American Girl sells a mini Kirsten in her original Meet outfit even though they haven't sold the 18 doll in years. She is the third mini I don't yet have. [caption id=attachment_1205 align=alignnone width=1436] BeForever Mini Dolls[/caption] In 2016, American Girl again released a special edition series of minis. At this time there were only eight historical dolls. Caroline had been retired and Melody hadn’t been released yet. Each mini came with a doll stand that placed them in a walking position and a small version of their My Journey Book. They were sold for $28 and were dressed in a special outfit. [caption id=attachment_1196 align=alignnone width=1498] 2016 Special Edition Mini Dolls[/caption] I display my five mini doll shelves across the top of an eight foot long dollhouse. I also like to place minis in dollhouse rooms to be dolls for my Truly Me dolls like in Emma’s Bedroom. Mini dolls are a great way to have multiple characters without a lot of space. When I wasn't able to purchase 18 dolls for lack of funds and space, I still enjoyed getting the newest doll in mini version. Hubby always puts a mini under the Christmas tree and the little girl inside of me can't wait to add her to the shelf! -Click here to view store photos of Girl of the Year 2015 Grace Thomas's collection- Update 1/1/2015! Happy New Year everyone! :) Grace is now officially released by AG and I have permission from AG to share these images. ^_^ There will be no further updates to this post. I will be uploading the photos taken from the store as soon as I get home so please check back later in the day. AGPlaythings forum user Impy found several links to images of our 2015 Girl of the Year, Grace Thomas' collection on the AG website and kindly gave me permission to share her find! Check out her impressive collection below: *Prices are shared from MissMidoria and posted here with permission.* Grace Thomas Doll & Book ($120): It looks like Grace's special item that will make her "worth" the higher price is that she comes with a charm bracelet as well as her ears are pierced and she comes with the heart shaped earrings below: The her bangs are shaped remind me a lot of Nellie's bangs, and for some reason her lip color looks darker to me that the current other AG dolls. I'll have to see her in person to decide though. I hate the touristy feeling of her T-shirt but I can understand why AG did it, since they want to stress upon her unique geographical location. It does make me wonder if we'll see people complaining that the American Girl is not "American" or something similar. Standard underwear! :D The charms on her bracelet are very cute, I admit. Her French bulldog, suitcase, macaroon (warning don't eat the bow on the macaroon), the Eiffel Tower, a recipe card, and heart with Paris on it are all rather cliche but they tie her collection in nicely. Grace Thomas Meet Accessories: I think the fingerless gloves are so cute and I love that the little bow matches her dog's bow! :D ---Thank you to Midoria for the correction. These accessories are Grace's meet, not the beret set with the macaroons. Those are her "welcome gifts".--- Grace Thomas Dog Bon Bon ($24): Her cute French bulldog has a black bow on his black ear, a red collar, and a matching red leash! Grace Thomas Pajamas ($24): The color reminds me a little of Jess' pajamas, or even Kanani's. Grace Thomas Fancy Coat ($28): This light blue and light pink combination makes me think of cotton candy... But I do like the style of the coat very much though! It looks like a "modern inspired" version of Addy's School Outfit currently out on the BeForever line. Grace Thomas Baking Apron/Everyday Outfit ($34): Another cotton candy themed outfit! I'm not sure if that's a jumper she has on or an apron. I can't see too much mix and match potential for this set (maybe the apron separately) but more creative people can probably figure something out. :) I don't understand why the cupcakes are upside down. :( I personally would have preferred for them to be right side up. Is this fashionable for the target market to wear prints upside down? XD Grace Thomas City Love Sweater Outfit ($34): This is a cute outfit and perfect for Valentine's day, but I'm not sure what the year long popularity power of this will be once the holiday has passed. Grace Thomas Fancy Dress Opening Night Outfit ($38): I think this dress is really cute! But now Grace really will look like a giant puff of cotton candy! Grace Thomas Travel Suitcase Set ($44): I like her travel set very much though I wish her passport at least wasn't in the light blue coloring. The tickets seem very realistic so that's a plus. Grace Thomas Baking Accessories Set ($65): Is that... a tablet with the recipe on it??? XD Talk about 21st century! It looks like you can either use the recipe card as a card, or you can stick it in the e-reader and use it that way. Grace Thomas Cafe Scene ($85): This set is actually on the cover of her meet book and I'm surprised they'd make it separately but it will be a nice in between for those who don't want to go all out for the big piece, her bakery. The sign can be changed and customized with the stickers, like Isabelle's makeup box. I hope they're magnets so they can be reused but I'm guessing they'll be stickers. Grace Thomas Bakery ($500): And here we get the grandaddy of her collection, the bakery, or La Patisserie set. It seems like it will be bigger than Lanie's camper or Samantha's ice cream parlor with more pieces and accessories. I love all the miniature pieces despite the plastic look of some of them (especially that pink cake stand) but I think overall it has a a lot of play potential. Now.... any guess to the cost of this juggernaut? ---Thank you to Midoria who shared the price of these items with us! According to her the bakery is mostly wooden as well, which why the price is so high?--- I must remember these are plastic. Darn it glands, stop drooling over fake pastries! ;D Grace Thomas Bakery Pastry Stand/Snack Cart ($150): For those who won't be able to bring the full sized bakery home, you can get the mini snack cart version instead! Based on the book summaries, I'm wondering if this is from when Grace returns back to the US and starts her own baking business? Grace Thomas Paris Welcome Gifts Purse Accessories ($32): Her accessories seem to be pretty cliche, a beret, macaroons, Paris postcards, and an Eiffel cookie. It seems on of the postcards at least has writing on it. I wonder if the other 2 are blank so you can write your own message. ---Thank you to Midoria for the correction. The reason these items are "cliche Paris" is because they are not her meet accessories but her Paris "Welcome Gifts". --- Grace Thomas Pajamas for Girls: Grace Thomas Meet Accessories Purse/Bag for Girls: Not pictured: Grace Thomas Exclusive Earrings Set ($16) Thank you again to Impy! Overall I think Grace is pretty, but I don't feel attracted enough to her to want to bring her home. I don't understand why she couldn't have been a black doll (#58 would look so adorable in these outfits!), but her collection at least is very cute, even if it's almost baby like in the color choices. To be fair though, I don't actively collect GotY so she would have to be incredibly overwhelming to move me to purchase her. I think her collection is wonderful, relative to what has been released for previous GOtY dolls, especially because she has so many "playable parts" in her collection, and if any of her food sets go on sale, there is a high chance I'll cave and get them. :D What does everyone think of her collection? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ (I am keeping this update up for the sake of reference.) Update 12/30/2014: After reviewing the AG's "Terms & Conditions of Website Use" at this link: http://store.americangirl.com/static/popups/termsConditions.html I sent an email to [email protected] asking for clarification on some of the points. Specifically, Section 1(C) where it states: "Mattel grants you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable, non-assignable, personal, and non-transferable license to (i) download (temporary storage only), display, view, use, play, and/or print one copy of the Content (excluding source and object code in raw form or otherwise, other than as made available to access and use via a standard web browser to enable display) on a personal computer, mobile phone or other wireless device, or other Internet enabled device (each, an “Internet Device”) for your personal, non-commercial use only" and "The foregoing limited license (i) does not give you any ownership of, or any other intellectual property interest in, any Content" which seems to give a limited license to display/use/view their Content as long as one does not use it for commercial/political purposes. Since this is a personal blog without a commercial/political agenda and I claimed no ownership/association with the company, I wanted to know whether I was allowed to post these images (or any AG images). The other point I wanted to clarify was in Section 10, where it clearly states: "We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable, non-assignable, personal, and non-transferable license to create hyperlinks to the Website, so long as: (a) the links only incorporate text, and do not use any trademark graphics that are owned or licensed to Mattel, (b) the links and the content on your website do not suggest any affiliation with Mattel or cause any other confusion, and (c) the links and the content on your website do not portray Mattel or its products or services in a false, misleading, derogatory, or otherwise offensive matter, and do not contain content that is inappropriate for children or that is unlawful, offensive, obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, violent, threatening, harassing, or abusive, or that violate any right of any third party or are otherwise objectionable to Mattel. Mattel reserves the right to suspend or prohibit linking to the Website for any reason, in its sole discretion, without advance notice or any liability of any kind to you or any third party." From this wording, it seems like links to the website are allowed as long as the links only have text, do not suggest affiliation with Mattel, and do not portray Mattel and its products in a false way, or contain content inappropriate for children which I did not do. I received the following response (personal information removed): "Dear ... The information you have posted has not yet been released by American Girl® and therefore should be removed immediately. Sincerely, American Girl Customer Service..." So with that response, I am removing the images as well as the links in the post until AG officially debuts GotY 2015 on January 1st. ^_^ I figure since I took the time to ask, I ought to respect American Girl's response and do as they specify, even if the response didn't clarify other points that I asked. I apologize to those who came here and are looking for the images. I will update this post when AG officially unveils her on the 1st. I will also be uploading photos from the store on Jan. 1st as well so please check back then if you are looking for more detailed, in person photos. :) If you have any questions you'd like me to "investigate" while I'm at the store, please let me know and I will do my best. ^_^ Note: There will be an exclusive, first look at GotY 2015 on Good Morning America this Wednesday from 7-9am, according the AG Facebook page. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

As one of the original three dolls, Kirsten has my heart! She was released in 1986 along with Samantha and Molly. Over the years she has undergone many changes. I have multiples of almost every historical doll, but I currently have nine Kirsten dolls. I have had more through the years, but have let some go. Each one is different. Not all of my Kirsten dolls are displayable as some are waiting for restoration. [caption id=attachment_436 align=alignnone width=1600] My Kirsten Collection[/caption] The original dolls started with white, muslin cloth bodies. In 1991, it was changed to tan for the release of Felicity. Felicity’s colonial fashions needed a lower neckline and the bright white body would show. For more information on Felicity visit Felicity Through the Years. Dolls around 1990-1991 are often referred to as “transitional”. The earliest Kirstens that I own are from 1988. My completely original ‘88 is stunningly beautiful. Her eyes have a deep richness to them. My other ‘88 had to be re-wigged with a ‘92 Kirsten’s wig. Her hair had been chopped off by her previous owner, but I couldn’t resist those chubby cheeks. 😉 Both dolls still have their original face color. The hair on my original ‘88 wig is finer and slightly thinner than the ‘92 wig. The ‘88 bangs are “wispy” vs blunt. I call these two my “best girls” because I take them everywhere and they are very photogenic. [caption id=attachment_438 align=alignnone width=1200] 1988 Pleasant Company Kirsten Dolls[/caption] In 1986-87, Pleasant Rowland, the founder of Pleasant Company signed 2,500 of each of the three dolls. I dream of owning a signed ‘86, maybe one day. (sigh 😉) My white body Kirstens include two 1988’s and two 1989’s. White bodies have very flat neck strings, where tan bodies slowly became more cord like. [gallery ids=447,444 type=rectangular] After the transition to tan bodies in the early 90’s, Kirsten had a full face and slightly lighter blue eyes. My 1992 Kirsten has a very innocent look and very pink coloring. She also has the “Do Not Cut” tag on her neck strings, this was used for a limited time in the early ‘90s. Neck strings hold the dolls head on and if cut it makes it harder to tighten or remove the head for repair. (I sometimes have to replace these during restoration, as some have worn out or been cut.) My 1995 Kirsten has a very thick body and quite the caboose! 😉 Her tan body is darker and has slowly been acquiring age spots that my earlier dolls have not been getting. [gallery ids=448,445 type=rectangular] After Mattel bought Pleasant Company in 1998, things started to slowly change. Over the years the dolls became much thinner and acquired body tags. Their neck stamp changed from Pleasant Company to American Girl. [gallery ids=449,446 type=rectangular] As the years went on, their faces slimmed and they were given a slight hour-glass figure. My 2009 Kirsten has two body tags and is notably smaller than her earlier Mattel version. My early PC girls are too chubby to fit into some of the newer American Girl outfits. [caption id=attachment_452 align=alignnone width=1400] 2005 compared to a 2009 Kirsten[/caption] Sadly, American Girl announced Kirsten's archival on October 1, 2009. Her collection was officially retired on January 1, 2010. Kirsten changed in different ways over the years, but no matter the differences she has always been adorable and a prized part of my collection.
