The Art of Animal Anatomy curates a selection of striking anatomical art into a neat package that would make a perfect gift.
Vintage large-scale wall chart of the anatomy of the "Mus decumanus" (Mammalia). Lithograph on two sheets of paper, mounted on canvas. Bright colors, some creasing, slight discoloration, cracks at centre top, protective tape at the edges, but overall good vintage condition considering its age and use. Author and illustrator was Prof. Dr. Paul Pfurtscheller. Pfurtscheller (1855 - 1927) produced a series of 39 "Zoologische Wandtafeln" (zoological wall plates) to be used for higher educational purposes. Although he was a modest high school teacher by training he gained recognition by the scientific Community worldwide for this outstanding work. The rat is "Plate 28" in the series. The Pfurtscheller wall charts were first published in Vienna, Austria, by 'A. Pichler's Witwe & Sohn' presumably circa 1902. Later editions were also published by Dutch company 'Martinus Nijhoff' until 1953. This item was published in Vienna, Austria, by 'A. Pichler's Witwe & Sohn' in 1910. It is one of the very early lithographed editions, whereas later editions used offset-printing.
Anatomy may be a scientific field of study, but its practitioners include some of history's finest artists. Many of them you probably know– da Vinci, Michelangelo, other Italian Renaissance artists – but we'll bet you've never heard of Hermann Dittrich.
