Down under? or up on top??? I show a lot of pictures from classes in the shop and we get lots of comments and emails from people that would like to do classes at Material Obsession. But guess what! NOW...
Anna Maria has a vibrant, fresh, bohemian aesthetic. This fall Market in Houston she revealed her new collection, Hindsight, that is a celebratory mash-up of her preceding collections over the past decade and a half. The Guest of Honor flower has an added center and has been combined with blooms and branches from Summer Totem. Sinister Swarm moths have been merged with flora from Small Gathering. Volumes are filled with True Colors, and Echinacea has been recolored. Natural Cadence combines Log Cabin blocks with appliqué butterflies created using Anna Maria's Moonbeam template collection (coming in 2020). Wheelhouse will be part of a 5 month program called Wheelhouse Medallion Club coming to local quilt shops. Anna Maria Horner also has a special Aurifil thread box to accompany the collection. Anna Maria created a memory quilt for herself featuring hearts of fabric from previous collections for shop owners to sign. Anna Maria's Conservatory collections are a conglomeration of various surface designers. The latest collections center around the theme: wild. Bookhou designer After the Rain, Monika Forsberg created Endless Summer, and Anna Maria's one contribution is titled One Mile Radiant. I attended Anna Maria's Schoolhouse session and got a closer look at each quilt. The Wild quilt features Conservatory Chapter 3 fabrics and can be created using traditional, Hawaiian needle-turn, or raw edge machine appliqué. The One Mile Radiant quilt is created from Anna Maria's collection for Conservatory Chapter 3. The After the Rain quilt features Bookhou's After the Rain fabrics for Anna Maria Horner's Conservatory Chapter 3. Monika Forsberg's collection is featured in Endless Summer.
This past weekend my wonderful, beautiful, amazing, kind and generous mom turned 60! And for the record, she doesn't look or act a day over ...
Over the past few months anything that I sew or quilt that includes my True Colors fabrics jumps right up to the top of my personal favorites list. Like of all time personal favorites. True Colors has proven to be my little dream come true fabric haul. I can barely plan anything that doesn't include a bit or a lot of it. Which is just exactly what I hoped for when designing it. Anyhoo. Here is the quilt that I have been asked about a whole lot. Color Dive. The Color Dive Quilt was inspired by my True Colors collection and is my newest video class on CreativeBug. I am also working on a PDF version of the pattern that we should have listed in the shop for sale soon, and I'll be sure to letchya know about that. When it's published, we'll have some kits ready for you too. We're like that. Here's the preview for the Color Dive class: The quilt uses every print in my Dowry collection + every print in my True Colors collection + a handful of solids. In case you'd like a chance to land an extra little pile of fabrics on your sewing table, you should follow along with the True Colors blog tour that is starting Monday at Sew4Home. There will be plenty of chances to win fabric + thread prizes and get loads of sewing inspiration along the way. Here's a scheduled list of the talented folks that are sharing their True Colors projects using my group (highlighted in pink) as well as Heather's, Joel's and Jenean's. On the 23rd and 24th of June we hosted the incredibly talented Anna Maria Horner for a fantastic workshop and what I think has been our most interesting event to date... The Private Dinner. I think a picture speaks a thousand words and these images do the events more justice than my words ever could. This post features photos from the Workshop. Plot Twist was the workshop we chose to hold - a choose your own adventure style of class with each participant working on their own unique version of Anna Maria's pattern. We love workshops like this one. They encourage the participants to tap into their own creative abilities and go their own way exploring a theme! Fabrics both new and old appear out of bags, and the buzz in the shop is electric. xoxo Lucy Thank you Anna Maria Horner for sharing her time with us and our beautiful community AND to all who attended the workshop. Without you we couldn't explore the possibilities of our new space here in Torquay - the ongoing support is incredible and it never goes unnoticed as it's very much appreciated!

Both of the quilts in this post are Biggies, both finishing at 90" x 85" Firstly is my Anna Maria Horner Herringbone quilt. I used this Maureen Cracknell tutorial it was super easy to change the size of the panels. It all started with a few strings thrown up on the wall Once I got going Issabella got interested and her usual brand of quality control was in full force. Those panels really did seem to go on for ever! I am really pleased with how this turned out, and I'm sure Him in doors is happy he finally has a quilt that covers his feet. The colours in Anna Maria Horner's fabrics really do pop in sunlight :) This one has been on my bed since I finished the binding, claimed by Him in doors as his own. The other big finish was a custom request through my Etsy shop, the client loved This quilt but the size just wasn't right for her. So after some back and forth between us we settled upon "similar but different" So using Pure Elements in Ocean Waves, Patina Green, Verve Violet, and Parisian Blue as a starting point I pulled coordinating Anna Maria Horner fabrics and started cutting. In all fairness there was no way my design wall was going to manage a 90x86 inch quilt! Sections are the way forward when pushed for space. The fabrics when all pooled together make me think of a calming spa, very restful and just what is needed in a quilt. The quilt is now residing happily at it's new home :) It was so nice to actually cut into fabrics I have been saving for goodness knows what. I still have enough AMH fabrics to make another 2 king size quilts, and I'm not afraid to use them!
So last night, I had the pleasure of attending a trunk show with Anna Maria Horner . It was sponsored by the Seattle MQG and held at the...
Dowry. (ps. putting the finishing touches on the above pattern today! Quilt pattern is now here!) I first learned what the word dowry meant from my mom when exploring my grandparents house in Greece as a little girl. I came across a small closed up room filled with linens all stacked from the floor to taller than me and a cabinet of dishes, etc. too as I recall. I asked my mom what it was and she said it was my cousin Eleni's dowry. Cousin Eleni was only a wee girl at the time, but busy family hands had been making for her since before she was born. Needless to say it made quite an impression and I wasted no time in asking where we kept my dowry. (I am sure that was good for laughs, as we didn't practice quite the same tradition here in the States.) Dowry is my newest feature collection of 24 quilting cottons. (And only quilting cottons actually for this line.) Here is my collection description: So often beauty comes to us in the form of tangible gifts, passed on by loved ones who have come before us. Even more lovely is when these goods were actually intended for and handmade with us in mind. This to me is the very heart of the handmade world, and I wanted to honor it with a collection that is very personal and built from the handiwork from my own family. Dowry is a compilation of literal translations of some of my own family heirlooms, some imagery is only from memory, and some prints are simply imagined companions that reference the handmade, hand stitched, and the well-loved. Dowry is at once nostalgic and energetic… a new love with a past life. Each of the colorways is named for a piece of jewelry I've been given. Rubies & Pearls (a ring from my great, great aunt) Charm Bracelet (from my parents for my high school graduation) Brass Locket (from my grandmother Anna Ruth, holding pictures of my grandfather, mom, and aunt) Being very literal about the translations of artwork from heirloom to fabric was incredibly satisfying. The process inspired me beyond the actual recreated artworks, but also completely reinvigorated my "mark" making. How I stroked the surface for each print. They are all a little different, and in the end sort of reference and pay tribute to several styles of print processes over centuries of making textiles. For instance, the Twill Bouquet was born out of my first needlepoint project as a child, but the texture inspired a twill motif rather than a needlepoint one. Those twill lines running through the bouquet saw fit to take a few turns in the negative space for some contemporary interest (not unlike my juvenile stitches that went in all directions). (Mom and I made that pillow together several years ago with my Bohemian fabrics after recovering the needlepoint from missing.) And the Lineage print. This dear deer of Yiayia's. Dear deer of mine (the story is here). It was important to me to invoke the print with the horizontal runnings of a loom, so all the art is created in line and purposefully a little imperfect in it's printing, slightly thinner here, overprinted there. It feels so special to me that way. Already belonging wherever it is. I love it. I cannot tire of it. Every print and title in this collection is special to me. Close to me and very personal. I could not have anticipated just how personal when I designed it, barely and secretly pregnant exactly a year ago, and still the daughter of a visible mother. I could not have. Yes, it's only fabric. Only things. But so are all of pieces and gifts that inspired the work. When Pierrette and I were shooting the above photo, the mannequin needed just a little something. I was able to pull out one of my mom's crocheted shawls still tucked in a box full of things I had just retrieved from her closet a few days earlier. Perfect. Only a shawl. But so very good to hold it, and see it. Like everything we give and receive out of love. While we do sell it, and it is my living, I also offer this with love. I hope you enjoy it! yours, Anna Maria
A beautiful vibrant quilt made using fabrics by the fabulous designer Anna Maria Horner. The pattern uses 10 inch squares sliced and joined with a strip in different combinations. This technique gives endless possibilities for arranging different colours and patterns to make an interesting pattern. This is a no neutral fabric resulting in a lovely rich kaleidoscope of intense colours. A lovely way to show case some gorgeous fabrics. The backing is a lovely fun blue forest design which makes a lovely contrast with the Anna Maria Horner fabrics on the front. The quilt is definitely reversible. The hand sewn binding picks out a range of the one of the fabrics used in the quilt. The quilting is a simple straight line pattern that does not detract from the lovely fabrics used. Aurifil thread gives the quilt a lovely texture The batting is cotton which ensures that the quilt is lovely and warm but not too heavy. This is a generous sized lap quilt and also looks lovely draped over a chair or sofa but best of all it is lovely to snuggle up with to watch a film or read a book or even to sit outside on a lovely winters day. This quilt would make a lovely new home gift /house warming gift A lovely addition to your home decor I also discovered when taking photographs that it also looks stunning on a dinning table. Machine wash on a gentle cycle with a mild soap. Dry flat or in your dryer to achieve the traditional look for a quilt. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like more information. I can also make other sizes to order
