This Antique Criterion Wooden Folding Camera with case and wooden dry plate holders is a great Collectors Piece! Perfect for any camera collector to use again or simply to use as a display piece! Made by the Gundlach Manhattan Optical Co of Rochester NY. It has a wide angle 8 X 10 lens by The Scientific Lens Co. The bellows are in great condition for their age. The rollers move freely. This piece comes with 3 dry plate film holders, the large holding case and a few other accessories. ( one is a broken dry plate) which could possibly be fixed again. The case does have damage to the top as it is unattached and the bottom is starting to let loose as well. ( please see photos) and if you would like more I can supply them as well. This piece has not been cleaned. It is being sold exactly as it has been found. We love the history these pieces tell of our past! Here’s a brief history of the Gundlach Manhattan Optical Co The company roots can be traced to 1879, when Ernst Gundlach and Lewis R. Sexton started working on optical goods manufacturing and trading. The Gundlach Optical Company name was registered in 1894 after Lewis died. In 1895 Ernst left the company, but it continued to bore his name. Gundlach was born in Pyritz, East Prussia. At the age of 15, he was apprenticed to Carl Friedrich Lewert in Berlin, Germany to learn how to make optical instruments. After four years, having served his apprenticeship he worked in various workshops in Austria, France and England. In 1876 Gundlach emigrated to the United States. He set up the microscope department of Bausch & Lomb. He later set up a number of optical companies. His first firm, the Gundlach Optical Company was established in Rochester, New York. In 1895 he left the company and founded a new one called Gundlach Photo-Optical Company (later renamed Ernst Gundlach, Son, and Company) which produced photographic lenses. In 1898 the Gundlachs left the company and it became the Rochester Lens Company. In 1904, Gundlach returned to Berlin, where he once again founded a business. He died in 1908.
