Carmen Giraldez was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1976. Carmen acquired her interest in art, and especially painting, from her father who is an avid collector and also a painter. Her early childhood training was “at his knees” as she likes to say. Since her childhood she has studied painting techniques and the arts through her father who had also painted from a very young age. In 1996 she began to study at Llotja from Barcelona A.A.O.A. (Arts and Crafts School) specializing in sculpture.

In studio art the new assignment is to take one of the works from one of the artists we studied and create a interpretation of it using water color paint, pencils, and ink. Above is a great example entitled from a work entitled Las Meninas- Diego Velázquez did the original on the left and Pablo Picasso did the interpretation on the right (one of 58 versions of the painting he did). These are just closeups from the larger paintings which you can view in the links above but you can see that each artists style is unique even though they painted the same subject matter. Extra Credit: If you're interested in doing an additional interpretive piece you can get extra credit for creating a piece for the Heckscher Museum's contest entitled Young Artists in which you choose a piece from the museum that showed this year and respond to it artistically. If you're interested look through their education website for more information and speak to Mr. Needles

Our "Figure Fridays" were a huge success again this year! For 8 weeks we had dance students come into the art room to pose for about 10 minutes. Each Friday, our AP students did gesture drawings of the dancers using a different medium each day, so that they ended up with a large piece of paper with layers of figure studies done in graphite, charcoal, oil pastel, pen and ink, acrylic, watercolor, chalk, crayon and colored pencil. When the 8 weeks were over, my art students had 4 days to deconstruct their figure works and create a new piece! The work is OUTSTANDING!
