“Aquinnah’s design was inspired by the rocky shores of the Brannock Islands on the northwest end of the Aran archipelago, windswept and lonely. A solitary lighthouse serves as a reminder of the Aran fishing tradition, and of the families who waited for the fishermen to return home.” – Kerry Robb Aquinnah wraps you in plush warmth and classic cable motifs: five-rope Aran braids and honeycomb cables. Four-stitch cabled twists and little strands of twisted rib punctuate the primary motifs and vary the scale; I-cord stabilizes the long edges and keeps the look clean and linear. The pattern offers three different sizes of wrap: a small stole in Shelter, a wider version in Quarry, and a 7-foot magnum opus in Shelter large enough to cuddle into with a loved one. Choose a color that coordinates with your home design, as you’ll want to leave this handsome accessory draped over your favorite chair to admire when you’re not wearing it. Irish Aran knitting patterns have a long and rich history, originating in the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Most commonly seen in sweaters, I have replicated those patterns here in blanket form. The Irish Aran Diamond and Honeycomb Blanket design is a mixed pattern of braided cables, honeycomb and intricately woven diamonds. Each pattern within an Irish Aran knit design holds meaning: the diamond stitch is said to symbolize the small farmer's fields on the islands, or sometimes fisherman's nets. The honeycomb pattern is said to symbolize bees, which in turn represent, hard work, reward, and good luck. If you are interested in more Irish Aran knits, check out my other patterns, including: the Chunky Celtic Cable Saxon Braid Blanket, the Celtic Cable Knotted Braid Blanket, and the Irish Aran Cabled Trellis Blanket. SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate. SUGGESTED MATERIALS: 9 balls of Lion Brand Off-The-Hook Yarn (3.5 oz/100g (Image shown is the colour ‘Beach Sand’). SUGGESTED TOOLS: No needles required (finger knitting). Scissors. FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Approx. 44” by 44” (111.5 cm by 111.5 cm). PLEASE NOTE: This pattern will work with any brand of loop yarn, but keep in mind that the size of the loops, and size of the balls/skeins of each brand is different. Lion Brand Off-The-Hook, Lion Brand Crayola Off-The-Hook, and Red Heart Loop-It yarns can all be used with this pattern as is and will yield a blanket of approximately the same same size. If you use Bernat Alize Blanket-EZ yarn, the loops are larger, so the blanket will be larger; and because the balls are larger (6.4 oz/180g), only 5-6 balls should be needed.
