About The Artwork "City Tales" (project) The city, a testament to our collective ingenuity, is a canvas of time, constantly shifting between the echoes of the past, the bustling vibrancy of the present and the future yet to be written. The urban landscape, though often thought of as an impersonal expanse of concrete and steel, is actually a blank slate waiting to be imbued with character and meaning. Within this urban theater, human lives unfold in complex narratives. Here, emotions are raw, expressions are multiple and experiences are etched on walls and pavements. These roads become not just roads but also scenes, resonating with personal and collective stories. It is a place where individual identity is intertwined with collective experience, revealing how the environment we build becomes a mirror of our shared experiences and aspirations. About The Artwork The first time I traveled to Japan, I was taking a walk in a park and ran down some stairs. A person scolded me. I felt bad. For Japanese people, education is very important. I always try to behave in a way that my presence in the places I visit will not be a nuisance to the people who live there. I never thought that an act like running, something childish, could be frowned upon. But then again, why would an adult behave like that? The second time I visited, I found these stairs, illuminated by a beam of light, and I couldn't help but remember that childish feeling of thinking that you did something wrong and you were reprimanded. Gary Horsfall hangs his hat in Seattle, Washington and lives his life wherever he can influence his work and travels to take him. In the past year that has spanned miles upon miles of walks across Seattle to a 1,200 mile 4x4 trek across The Northern Territories and Western Australia (Darwin to Broome along and off, Highway 1). Oh, and a couple, three or four places in all directions in between……… Overall, the theme behind my work is “unlocking what’s in plain sight.” A consummate observer of the world at large; art, beauty and creativity have always been a significant part of my life and in that, play themselves out through my photography. Through my work I seek to capture what I discover as I roam through my life. And, I’ve led a big life, or so I’ve been told. My observation is not subject to exclusive preferences. I’m drawn to capture people in their natural environments, the beauty of nature and the grandeur, large and small, of man-made objects. I hope that what you find most striking about my work is the nuance that’s there to be discovered through thoughtful, studied observation. I tell stories…… What do you see in the image, familiar to you though the subject may be, what haven’t you perhaps noticed before? What’s the relationship between the things that were captured? What’s the situation? Is a “complication” suggested? What question(s) arise for you as you immerse yourself in the image? What story can you imagine that answers those questions? You won’t find Waldo but sometimes you may be surprised by what you do find. Look up my image “Trinidad 2017 No.59. What’s in the bootblack’s right ear? It’s not a hearing aid……… Or, look up “Santiago 2017 No.6. When was the last time that you saw someone with four feet!?! See something unusual or unexpected in one of my other images (hint: look at mushrooms). Please send me an email and share [email protected]. Perhaps you’ll see that my black and white work hearkens back to the Golden Age of photography spanning the late 1800’s through the 1950’s. At that time the world was transfixed by the likes of Steichen, Sander, the Weston’s, Cunningham, Walker, Frank, Abbott and Penn. My monochrome images interpret today’s world through the “lens” of that time period. A comprehensive guide to the Art Nouveau architecture in Riga, a true Mecca for culture-enthusiasts in Europe.
I've got some interest in architecture, but only recently discovered that I actually like taking pictures of buildings on a trip to Dresden. Then I went back to look through my hard disc and rediscovered some photos from San Francisco and London, which turned out decently with a bit of cropping, perspective correction and colour adjustments. And I've been snapping away ever since ...
