| Surely many students would have liked to have at the architecture school professors as the two authors of this book. Both McCarter as Pallasmaa are two of the most internationally renowned educators in architecture. For what reason? This book is a good answer. David H. Falagán The introduction of the text makes clear the authors’ point of view: This primer on architecture takes as its starting point the premise that architecture cannot be evaluated or understood without our experience of it. Understanding architecture does not require specialized knowledge or skills, but rather begins in the everyday experiences of inhabitation. So, the first warning of the authors is related to the time we live, where the evaluation of architecture is usually addressed from the appearance of buildings rather than their experience. The first feature of this way of looking at architecture is that the architectural experience is not a static but a dynamic event. The second feature, that engages perception throughout the body, all the senses, and therefore it is not only visual. Third, the involvement of architecture is not only material but spiritual in the person who lives or experiences it. Therefore, readings, interpretations or sensations of architecture are open and variable depending on myriad factors. So, to be understood, architecture must necessarily be experienced. To demonstrate that, in the book McCarter and Pallasmaa propose "visiting" no less than 72 buildings, quite heterogeneous temporally and geographically. Through these visits, the authors explore 12 aspects directly related to the experience of architecture -space, time, matter, gravity, light, silence, dwelling, habitation, ritual, memory, landscape and place. Their descriptions of the visits through these concepts not only bring the readers to the actual experience of these different architectures, but are also a true guide to observing architecture. The book ends up being a fascinating journey around the world in which we discover that we not only learn to appreciate the sites proposed as a sample, but to feel our own perception of the architectures that surround us.
