If you've ever wondered, this is how you make cyanotypes. Easy instructions and a list of supplies you need to create your own cyanotypes.
About The Artwork Though this looks like printmaking this monotype is actually a kind of 19th century lensless photography, a cyanotype. What you see up close are three overlapping images of the same flower, creating varying shades of blue. This is a multiple exposure photograph of a freshly cut agapanthus from my garden. All my hand-printed botanical cyanotypes are made from living plants and are one-of-a-kind. There is no etched plate, carved block, ink or printing press to reproduce what you see. Printing on fabric treated with cyanotype chemicals has always fascinated me - I've dabbled in it a bit, but never really explored it more than that. With all the plant life returning, I'm getting several ideas using cyanotype printing - hopefully I'll have something to show you in a week or two! So what is it? Cyanotype is coating a surface with certain chemicals that when exposed to light make a blue-tinted photographic image. It's been around a long, long time .... British scientist Sir John Herschel invented the process in 1842 and it was one of the main photographic processes used until the early 1900's when black and white photographic prints became more popular. British artist Anna Atkins was one of the early users of cyanotype, creating this piece between 1851 and 1854. You can paint the cyanotype chemicals on a wide range of objects - paper and fabric are mainly used. I'm especially interested in using the process with fabric! I've shown this piece of Lotta Helleberg's before, cyanotype fabric pieces put together into a quilt. This is something along the line of what I'm thinking of working on - I just need to do a little more research into how this type of piece could be laundered. Entanglement, cyanotype appliqued onto linen and hand stitched, 2016. detail of the above work See more of Lotta's work here. Lynette Miller is an artist who works in several mediums, cyanotype being one. I love the way light works in this print of hers made with old bottles: And these are fun gift tags: See more of her work on her blog here. Arizona artist Annie Lopez uses the cyanotype prints she makes to create clothing sewn from vintage patterns. You can see more of her work and read about her in this article from Images Arizona here and the Phoenix New Times here. Happy Creating! Deborah
About The Artwork This week’s wind storm blew down so many pine branches that I had to make art. The long narrow format is reminiscent of Chinese silk paintings. All of my botanical cyanotypes are one-of-a-kind mono types made with living plants laid in that composition exactly one time. There is no etched copper plate, no carved wooden block nor ink nor printing press allowing reproduction. About The Artwork This artwork was inspired by Victorian lepidopterist Margaret Fountaine. Described as a natural-born hunter: whether it was love, adventure or butterflies, her pursuit was relentless and her energy legendary. She emerged from an unremarkable Victorian upbringing with an extraordinary drive to self determination which defined her entire life. Unconventional by nature, Fountaine was never cowed by society’s strictures, or by what was expected, this provided her with many exciting opportunities. The price of her freedom was high but she never regretted her choices. A passionate lover and fearless individualist, her life was founded on the idiosyncratic determination to pursue her own path irrespective of convention. This is taken from the series "Women Who Discovered The World" cyanotypes based on females in the field of natural history and science. Ones who particularly inspire me, deserve to be recognised and celebrated as powerful figures in time. Technique- Love Among The Butterflies (Margaret's Memoirs) was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, a wig made of hydrangea flowers and photographs of preserved butterfly specimens. After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, they are left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negatives are then contact printed onto the paper pieces by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The prints are then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. They can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once dried the individual butterflies and are hand cut and mounted onto the print to create a multi-layered, 3-dimensional collaged artwork. Paper - Handprinted on handmade recycled cotton rag paper: 640gsm / 100% Cotton Rag / Recycled / Acid Free / PH Neutral / Rough Original Created:2022 Subjects:Portrait Materials:handmade papercotton rags Styles:PortraitureSurrealismFigurative Mediums:Cyanotypepaper cutcollagehandmade paper Details & Dimensions Photography:Cyanotype on handmade paper Original:One-of-a-kind Artwork Size:23.3 W x 32 H x 2 D in Frame:White Ready to Hang:Yes Packaging:Ships in a Crate Shipping & Returns Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments. About The Artwork Perception can be driven by the use of light. Our self-perception can't be defined as just one, as it constantly changes and adapts. Movement creates transformations, and I tried to record it. Images created using an UV light and long exposures with a digital camera. Transferred on transparent film and then printed with cyanotype. About The Artwork Framed in an 18 x 24 inch solid natural wood frame 3/4" wide. This is a combination of painting and an alternative photographic process from the 1800s: cyanotype. I drew the plant and painted it in —not with paint, but with light-sensitive photo emulsion. The blue and white pattern seen in each leaf which resembles painted Delft pottery is really a sunprint or cameraless photograph of tiny plants laid on top. If you look closely you may see a tiny flower or two... Plants and nature are fragile and easily thrown off balance by humans. Porcelain is the most fragile of clays to make pottery out of. The title ‘Delft Garden’ is both literal and a metaphor for the delicate earth we live on that was once even called a Garden of Eden. About The Artwork An edition of only 4 of this design, each individually processed and unique. A witchy alliance of flowers and moon, captured by sunshine in a watery blue cyanotype. A cyanotype, or sun print, is an antique photographic process where prints are developed on photosensitive paper exposed to sun light. This cyanotype paper and original print were handmade and processed in a patch of sunlight on an autumn morning. Each cyanotype is incredibly varied in tone and texture, subject to the whims of nature - a splash of water, a passing cloud. The work embraces imperfection. It is tactile and analog, and nostalgic for a bygone era. Another cyanotype print made in Amsterdam of a negative from a poppy flower.
Roses are blue, violets are ultraviolet, and beauty is made of chemistry and light.

About The Artwork Rosa Canina is an 18x24 photograph I took in Aptos, California. This is a Cyanotype that was developed using a procedure from 1842 that was primarily used to produce copies of drawings or blueprints. This process is done by coating watercolor paper with chemicals to make it light sensitive thereby allowing me to develop a negative with the use of sun to make a positive image. Once I wash the paper, it turns a Prussian Blue or Cyan Blue as it's known. Artwork description: Titled as such as it's the Afrikaans word for gaze, as I took the photo of a beautiful muse in South Africa and then turned it into a cyanotype print back in the UK. The first in a series I've made to then select which to make larger, who wants to see this one scaled up? The cyanotype process uses a mixture of iron compounds, which when exposed to UV light and washed in water oxidise to create Prussian Blue images. Can have a white box frame for an additional price- please enquire if interested.
